Plains of Shinar
(Third Age)
Plains of Shinar beckon me as beckoned men before,
whence called to distance from our Lord,
came fools in search of more.
In vanity I gave my hands ambitious tasks of men,
then stood atop my tower proud,
yet always built again.
Till piercing through the clouds above, no longer could I see
my smaller brethren far below,
now lesser men than me.
Exalted in my heights of pride
with godliness thereof,
blinded thus, I finally heard
the voice of God above.
“Come out of her my fallen child, ignore ye not my call!
Rejoice ye not in mighty works,
your Babylon must fall.”
Plains of Shinar beckon me, ghosts of vanity,
lead me back from fallen walls
to humble, bended knee.
