I have been asking myself the same question. What i believe is that Big Brother doesnt put telescreens or microphones in the upper room maybe because he doesnt believe that a man of that age has anything he needs to hide. Or another reason is maybe because Big Brother doesnt see a need to have him under his watch because he thinks the old man is not educated enough to try to revolt against him. Yet i do not know the answer for certain.

The reason why there is no telescreen is because BB feels that there's no need to watch someone who is incapable of doing anything other than what they're told or expected to do. The proles aren't educated enough to know what's going on or what is right and wrong. At the end of the novel things will make more sense, you'll find out the truth and the 100% correct answer to your question. Keep reading!

exactly in the book the proles are compared to animals

Not necessarily, the proles are still being kept under watch just not as strict as the others, which still considers them human so to say. Calling them animals is too harsh of a way to label them. The proles are just the outcasts of the social class, the lowest level.

Mr. Charrington has more dimensions to him then just a nostalgic shop owner. He is pretty influential to Winston's life. Keep reading!!!

I believe that there are no telesceens in the upstairs apartment because the people that lived before this time were brain washed so they do not need to watch him. Also because he can not afford a telesceen he said they are to expensive he told Winston. But I still dont truely know why they just dont give him a telesceen just to watch him and see what he is doing.

The old man does not have a telescreen because they dont believe that it is really needed to watch a man of that age. The reason why is because the old man is already brainwashed. As you recall in the bar when he was arguing with the bartender about a pint of beer instead of a quart. They do not make him have a telescreen mainly because he is too deep into the past to know anything about the present.

Crikey, I wish you guys would finish the book before making decisions on why things are happening.

Both of the last two posts are completely incorrect.

A hidden telescreen and Charrington's position as a member of the Thought Police will show you where your premises are wrong.
