Why is there pain?
So we can learn from our mistakes?
So we suffer?

Why is there Happiness?
So we think life is worth living?
So we believe in happy endings, when really there aren't any?

Why is there misery?
So we feel crushed and worthless?
So as to wonder why we were created?

So many answerless questions...
Will we ever hear the faintest echo of explanation?
Are we simply puppets on string?
Are we toys to our creators?
Are we supposed to figure out equations?
Or are we in this world to know the questions and only wonder the answers?

I can't remember where I heard this, nor exactly what it was, but it seemed to be that pleasure and pain were God's way to try to wake us up.

I think the collective statements of 'we' is presumptious. I don't agree that there are no happy endings so it makes enjoying your own individual journey less powerful as a result, if that makes sense. These are questions which you seek to answer and from a reading point of view reading your own endeavour rather than 'our' endeavour would be much more enjoyable.

Good questions to ponder though.

@Delta. I think the author is asking metaphysical questions, not conditional ones. What is the general purpose of pain? Etc. not what does pain mean to me? I think the author is therefore justified in using the “we.” Your point about happy endings is valid, though. The poem does seem to assert the opinion that there are no happy endings as a matter of fact, which does not help the poem, and makes it appear a bit childish.

It made me think of teenage angst. But you maybe a teenager. In which case it would be apt. Or you maybe young at heart. But it wasnt an old buggers poem. That is no bad thing,
