Dutch author Harry Mulisch died yesterday at the age of 83.

Sad.

He made me like books for the first time.

RIP

Sad indeed. And I’m ashamed to admit that, although I own a few of his works, I have yet to read a single one. But at least that much can be remedied. :)

What are his best books? I just read Siegfried, which mixes fiction and history in a profound and dark story.

The Assault was acclaimed all over the world, but apparently The Discovery of Heaven is deemed his best, and up there with the rest. Haven't read it, but I think it combined something with God giving up his pact with man with the bombing of Dresden.

A small clip (http://www.eenvandaag.nl/binnenland/36577/harry_mulisch_1927_2010), in Dutch, for those interested which gives a bit about Mulisch’s, quite interesting, past and in which he also expresses a very practical view about death, namely, that it’s only a state that matters for those who aren’t. Don’t know if his death has really captured quite as much foreign attention (hence, I’m pretty sure that anyone who is inclined to watch this clip can probably understand it ), but, as he always was fond of saying: In Nederland ben ik wereldberoemd. I’m world-famous, in Holland. ;)
