Soldiers of Fortune

He was an old boy
a soldier of fortune
son of war
drinking whiskey
and playing sad songs
singing sweet melodies
but they always ended
on the same note,
with a girl in a yellow dress
who fades into memory,
while the sun is always hot
and the night is always cold
blood that dries
but never washes clean.

He was a lost soul
who sinned for glory
and they all saw the devil
in the desert and laughed
while they danced a jig
with the corpses at
their feet.

And the moon she was cold
watching in soundless
condemnation,
a mother and a lover
she knew enough of men
incapable of mercy.

The furies barked
like starving dogs,
regrets began to erode the heart,
dreams darker than
starless nights,
they'd sooner die
than make the long road home
with the faces of the dead
and murder on their soul,
what right had they
to ask for love,
to fall to there knees
in the rain and beg
forgiveness.

Let Hell come
baptismal by fire,
while mothers and daughters cried,
and they looked the dead child
in the eyes seeking answers
and fearing redemption
more than punishment.

is answerers supposed to be answers? It makes more sense if it is.

This chill between soldiers, love and forgiveness sends a shiver down my spine. I came back from Vietnam recently with just this feeling.

Oops, thank you for catching that!
