Growing up I had box turtles as pets. I had 7 of them and they all had names. I used to hold turtle races in the back alley. I would tape a number to their back and draw one small circle and then a great big circle around it. I would place the turtles in the small center circle and whoever crawled over the line of the large circle won the race. All the kids used to come to encourage the turtles but then the parents and adults started showing up and betting on the turtles. The police took me home with my turtles in their box and threaten my parents with holding illegal gambling. So much for the turtle races!

I also had a diamond back turtle that lived in the dog’s wash basin!

Then one time I decided to build my own amusement park! I drew up plans for a putt putt mini golf course and a ‘spinner ride.’ The putt putt course was easy to build but my invention of the spinner stumped me for a while. Then I figured out how to take a metal garbage can and attached it to an old swing set. You would climb into the can, I would put on the lid and I would start to push you higher and higher; I had swivel hooks on the side of the can that attached to the swing chains. Once you got going really well I would then spin the can so you would be swinging and spinning around at the same time! It was a real thrill and everyone liked it and I charged money, five cents for a ride and ten cents for 5 holes of putt putt. It was great until the lid popped off the can and my cousin Susan came flying out of the swinging, spinning can and landed in the holly bush and hit her head against the brick wall. That was over quickly and my parents made me dismantle it and I couldn’t leave the house for two weeks and had to scrub all my neighbors’ marble steps for free for a month! I thought then and still think now that was a little hefty punishment for being creative. She was never my favorite cousin anyway and without trying you never know what you are cable of.

Very enjoyable - but I was left with imagining racing turtles that took a couple of days to cross the finishing line! or are they a little speedier than tortoises?

And you deserved credit for such enterprise - not punishment.
