The 2 minutes dedicated to hate each day are meant to serve as a release of all the emotions which are built up by people, and not expressed. That way, throughout the day, it is easier for anyone to suppress what they feel. Additionally, it distracts most from The Party's actions, and instead focuses all negative thoughts and sentiments upon a given scapegoat, such as Goldstein.

Especially sex. Hate is a good outlet for sexual frustration. I think Orwell figured that one out personally.

Pretty sure.

He had very little to do with women, and it seems to be a bit of a theme in his own life that the few women he did desire never worked out for him. He was once famously chased across open country by a man on a motorcycle who was a rival for one woman's attention, so I don't think he was asexual.

I'm also pretty sure a lot of Flory's sexual frustration & behaviour in Burmese Days is autobiographical.

When the people are only focused on hating ONE person, they are so overcome with hatred it blinds them... when the only source of evil is Goldstien, Big Brother is their savior.
