Me, I felt incredibly elated. It was a huge confidence boost for me as a writer. That was... well, until I saw how shoddy the manuscript was. When I finished my second novel there a few months ago, I was in the same boat again. Horribly written manuscript full of plot holes.
My buddy Ben, who wrote this blog post on the subject (http://hortorian.com/2010/10/your-first-novel-2/) a while back seems to feel that no one will take your story seriously until it's finished. I think there's some logic in that. Concepts are well and good, but it's the execution that confirms their value. No one will be able to measure it properly until they read it for themselves.
Another point he made is that not everyone will publish their first novel. Agreed - 100%. My woefully written 60k word manuscript, bearing the clichéd title ''The Demons of Draco Drim'' was material for the fire, in essence.
Thoughts?
