So we read from a play (known as Hotel Sorrento, it is an aussie play that focuses upon values attitude, powerful groups and marginalized groups (kind of like pride and prejudice) and than we are suppose to answer this question: How has the theatrical elements (lighting, props, setting, character expression/ appearnce, tone and language of the character ect.) of the play influenced reader positioning. I am struggling on this part. For instance, in this scenerio a father died in a car crash and the wife and son of this father are talking about the old memories they had about each other. Hill is the mother and Troy is the son.

Hill: Oh... kids bounce. That's what they say isn't it?

Troy: What d'you mean?

Hill: They cope. Sometimes I think they cope better than adults. Look at you. You've coped. But maybe it's different for you because your father's dead. Sometimes I wonder whether death isn't easier to deal with. Because it is final. And because it's nobody's fault. I don't know Troy. (Pause. Her tone lightens)

If things'd been different and your oldies got divorce, never know what might happen to you. Might have been a dribbler. That'd be nasty. (Troy does not respond to the joke. There is an awkard pause. Hil lights a cigerette)

It was only a joke

Troy: Yeah. Well it wasn't very funny.

Hill: Sorry.

Troy: How come you can't be serious?

----

So my guess is that the mother was joking in order to escape reality, that being that the father died. Further, perhaps she is smoking a cigerette to escape the awkard situation. Maybe this is symbolic...? I'm not quite sure how the prop (cigerette) affects the reader positioning

Oh I forgot to add something. Instead of reader position it's about how it influences the audience
