Love in the Eyes of Death

I danced upon your bed of skulls
as they seemed to laugh
empty-eyed
staring
without
seeing

For whenever you are near
I am so far away
and I melt
when I see the look within your eyes
but the shadows
are paralyzed
ghosts in a
smoke-filled room.

Why is it that I choke
upon the words you speak
there is no escape
from those grinning skulls
left among the ashes
we gaze across
Elysium
but this is not our place.

And when we hold hands
I disappear into you
and watch the world pass by
through death's eyes.

I love the opening line - it lets us know exactly what we are going to be faced with. Some Gothic carousel - and you never let us down.

The first 2 lines of verse 2 are a bit of a pop-song cliche - if I may say so. And a couple of typos had me re-reading unnecessarily :

when I see the look within your eyes

and

Why is it that I choke

But I love the image of ghosts paralyzed in a smoke-filled room and the world passing by through death's eyes.

The cliche was semi-intentional. This poem was the product of a conglomeration of two vastly different ideas which I decided to merge together into one, it is a love poem that became emeshed into this gothic horror story.
