The Politics of Soup

Here come the other guys!

We don’t speak of politics on here
because, for too many of us,
politics is synonymous
with the cunningly flavoured soup
we offer each other
across a table where,
not we but circumstances
have brought us together.

“Here, try this soup,”
we offer each other:
we - and they - who are hungry
for nourishment, for purpose,
fraternity, but there are always enemies
whose soup we have flavoured,
as they have ours,
with poison.

A subtle and lightly-seasoned poem, but highly spiced with much more shrewdness and underlying humour than some palates might manage to appreciate.

This is a poem I feel I can fully engage with.
