The talking Cactus
Long ago in the mid 1700s a trade rout was formed along the middle of the Mojave desert. Men would ride their horses, hauling supplies between the two towns. The Mohavi Indians despised the Spaniards and often raided their towns. On one particular journey across the Mojave Desert, the Spaniards were followed up by some Mohavi Indians on horse back. Fransisco Jimenez de Quesada, watched as one by one his fellow men were smashed in the head then chin, with clubs. At that time he realized that if he wanted to live he would have to run through all of the confusion, so he managed to slip away. Fransisco Jimenez de Quesada was now in the middle of the desert without water, food, or steed. Although he could still hear the cries of victory in the distance, he doubted they would spot him now that he was so far away. He went on for three days without water. He saw a cactus. Then he thought about it. “Cactuses have water!” Said he. He walked up to the cactus, pulled a knife from his pocket and started to stab it into the cactus. “HEY!” Cried the cactus, “Why are you stabbing me with that knife? That hurts!”
“I need the water inside of you to quench my thirst,” Fransisco Jimenez de Quesada replied. Then the cactus said, “Fool! Why drink my flesh when you could simply drink out of that big canteen around your neck?” Fransisco looked down. Sure enough, there it was. He opened it then took a hefty swig of his water. He repeated this process until the canteen was entirely empty. “I thank you, but I still thirst for water, so I shall drink your insides,” “Fool! Are you blind? Do you not see the well you are leaning against?” Asked the cactus in an aggravated tone. He looked beside him and once again, the cactus was right. He cranked the bucket to the top, grabbed it, then drank out of it. After he finished drinking, he looked down it the bucket. He spat out the water in surprise when he noticed a large fish in it. “It’s my lucky day!” He exclaimed, “First water, and now food, plus when there’s one, there’s more, I’ll bet there a 100 fish in that well!” “Fool! Why would you eat me, when there is a butcher right behind you?” Said the fish. He looked behind him, there was indeed a butcher shop behind him. He walked in. It was deserted, so he helped himself to some sausage and left the money on the counter. He walked out of the shop. “Now I just need a fire to cook this sausage on and a mount, then in the morning I can ride out and find town,” Said he. “But why would you need a steed to find it, if you were already in the middle of it?” Asked the pointy plant. He looked around. Fransisco Jimenez de Quesada was in the middle of town.
