View Full Version : The Poem as a Visual Work of Art

We already know (or should) that a poem is a marriage of form and content, a work of literature whose aesthetic value lies not only in what is said but also in how it is expressed.
But there is a third element in which certain types of poems (experimental, concrete, e.g. ) can move over to another circle in the Venn diagram, in which literature and art overlap. In these rarefied cases, the typeface and the arrangement of text on the page resemble a painting.
Here's an enlightening article on the subject:

I love this topic.
I read a jot about a poet, not listed in the article you cite, who had a birthday in September, eliciting an article of his written form at thefreedictionary.com/ , and I lost the reference ! Maddening.
I've seen others in written form. One would think using the computer would open up more creative forms (the written form limited to being static in nature).
Haunted at http://www.online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50408&page=14 had a wonderful gem made of her poem "existence" just recently.
I wanted to emulate her idea in my poem but could not get the app (must be a free app; read: no budget) needed to perform what I wanted (read further down same thread). Sigh. But I shan't give up. (anyone help ?)

I too tried to do something like this once, being inspired by the same Apollinaire poem as Aunt's link mentions over there.
Here (http://online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28178&page=2) are my poor attempts at visual poetry a few years ago. I havent tried it again since, but I remember finding the form quite interesting.
Edit: As there are several misleading posts in there (where the images have disappeared over time due to uploading limitations) this link (http://online-literature.com/forums/showpost.php?p=965500&postcount=24) should work better.
