That Chicago one looks fantastic. That's what pizza up here looks like, except the cheese on top is thicker.

I have to say, the New York style is my favorite. I like thin crust, little sauce, lots of cheese. And that's mostly New York!
I don't like thick pizza - too much of a mess (particularly the Chicago one).

Sorry, just the snobby comments of a person used to only Italian pizza, but that Chicago one looks more like a tomato-y cuiche to me. Not like a pizza. So therefore, New York, if it has to be one.

Being a huge fan of cheese, I would straightforwardly go for the New York one!

I much prefer the New York style (thin) to the Chicago style.

And if a meal are we talking breakfast or dinner???

Both have their place, but I'll go with New York as a general rule.

Best pizza I ever had was in Sweden: they took the crust and made it in the shape of a viking boat and filled it with steak and Bearnaise sauce, among other things. Amazing!

But the Chicago one has substance! That New York one is thin, flat and greasy, nothing to it. After you have a slice of the first one, you're going to be pumped with energy and feel great. A slice of the second one? Pimples and a tummy ache.

Oh please, when I was in Chicago two years ago I made an effort to check out the best pizzarias to compare. I've heard the trash talk from Chicagoans. Ptthhhh!:prrr: Not even close. It's not even close. New York pizza kicks their a$$ over by a lot. Take it from a pizza connoisseur, New York pizza is by far superior: the dough, the sauce, the cheese, the texture. Hands down New York was superior.

Holy Crap Virg, We agree! New York style is Pizza, Chicago style is dough with a little sauce and some cheese.

Australian Pizzas are the best. I think the NY looks dead on its feet - dry cardboard. A pizza needs life - more like the Chicago pic - a single slice a meal unto itself!

this one looks good for a laugh! http://www.gobbledegeek.com.au/wp-content/uploads/post_images/australia_shaped_pizza.jpg

Anyone know what pizza is like in Europe? I heard that they don't do tomato sauce in France, they have a cream sauce.

New York has many types of pizza, not just the flat kind shown above. By the way, that's either called by a typical New Yorker a round slice or just a slice or if you are of Italian heritage, that's called a Neopolatan slice. And no, if it's done correctly, it tastes nothing like cardboard. The dough should be crisp on the bottom with an almost spongy layer on top. This is what it should look like:

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_rUyfOI7LHdE/Shw4gnK_h9I/AAAAAAAABKo/SqazvZTYmSk/s400/New+york+Pizza+CU.JPG

Now some pizzarias may emphasize the cheese over the sauce, and others may emphasize the sauce and minimize the cheese. I prefer more sauce and less cheese, but most New Yorkers go the other way. Either way it should be steaming hot so that the oil can if you're not careful burn the roof of your mouth. If it's really hot, you hang the slice down to let the oil drip off.

The other major type of New York pizza is a square slice, or if you;re Italian, a Scicilian. The ingrediants are the same but they must let the dough rise more, and there's usually more sauce and mozzarella cheese. This is waht it looks like:

And of course you can put all sorts of toppings on it. I've seen everything.

Now there are also lots of small pizza restaurants that kind upgrade pizza to a higher level of cuisine. Here's a local pizza (from Staten Island) that has won several international contests.

Look here for video clips: http://www.goodfellas.com/best_pizza07/CBS_01.htm

They claim to be the best in the world, and i love going to them, but we have others here in NYC that I enjoy too. The point is that great pizza is all around in New York.

Finally I leave you with the openning from the movie Saturday Night Fever. Look at the 1:15 time in the clip and you'll see Tony (John Travolta) eating two slices at the same time. Very cool. That's my old neighborhood in Brooklyn that I grew up in. :wink5:

Shouldn't this be in the Serious Discussions forum? :confused5:

I agree with others that light sauce is best--the sauce should be flavorful enough that it's not needed in abundance--but when I worked as a kitchen manager of an Italian cafe, I noticed that skimping on the sauce was the preferred shortcut of my lazy, stoned labor force. Going too light on the cheese was a close second.

Another way the slackers would ruin a pie was through their tendency to overload pizzas with toppings, especially veggies. You see, a handful of onions or green peppers or olives is almost always too much for a single pie (it's about right for mushrooms). But rather than putting the correct amount of toppings on the pizza and returning the excess to the bin, whatever amount they grabbed in their grubby paws went on the pie. And since vegetables release water when cooked, their pizzas would invariably end up as soggy, gloppy messes. Without enough sauce. Or cheese.

Considering my exacting standards on the topic of pizza, you can imagine how popular I was with my employees.

oh boy... I drank so much last night and so much soda with it that I feel fat and really really sick today, but after looking through this, I am really tempted to go make a pizza.

My vote though, will go for other.

I don't like paper pizza and I don't like pizza that will make want an abortion.

My friend however makes this pizza with peppers baked into it, there is nothing better!

Here in the UK, it is usually "Italian" or "deep pan". These days "stuffed crust" is also an option at many places, too, and it is so good that it is bad! I end having only the crust, leaving the rest of the pizza to the others.

I usually like "Italian" as long as it is not paper-thin but I like making my own pizza at home as well so can adjust the thickness of the base accordingly... And the amount of sauce! Too much sauce is really a deal-breaker for me.

Never had "Chicago"; I imagine with the "right" toppings, it might be delicious but still doubt that it would taste like "pizza" to me.

I hate deep pan pizza. I love thin based pizza like the new york one. The Pizza's i've had in Italy are more like that, but as Virg said, crispy base, slightly doughy on top, the way it should be. yum yum.
I really like some of the Goodfella's brand Pizza. Their Delicia range is nice.

The Chicago one looks interesting, but all the pizza here in Montreal is more in line with the New York kind, or those squarish ones. There are also those really thin trendy kinds that some restaurants serve, but not so crazy about them.

There's a pretty sizable Italian community in Montreal. I've lived here my entire life and I've never even been to visit our Little Italy.

For someone like myself - born and raised in Naples and its surroundings - it is always scary - but funny too - to look at the ways the world has changed - and most of the time destroyed, look at that Chicagoan horror - our food.

The following image is from one of the temples of the Neapolitan pizza, the Trianon

I voted other mainly because I'm mostly used to mom's version. Middle-height dough, a democratic coat of tomato sauce (that is, not so much), ham, a reasonable coat of cheese, anchovy, and a green olive per slice:

http://i1005.photobucket.com/albums/af178/maxicastro/Candids/mumspizza.png

Although, if it's called a pizza, then I can take a bite at it, whatever the origin. I'm nowhere near reluctant to experiment with new variations of pizza http://smiles.kolobok.us/remake/nyam.gif

I like so many different styles that I can find fault with none of the descriptions - not even the 'soggy vegetable syle', and it comes down to being in the mood for what one to (wisely) choose

Sometimes I want pizza Supreme - with the lot - and when I want the lot, I want lots of the lot

There's a place nearby that makes the Volcano - peperino smothered in hot chili sauce - sometimes that's the only

There's a little one a few suburbs away who's Supreme includes king prawns and great chunks of the biggest mushrooms

Calzone Rustico - folded pizza which always surprises

Sometimes something simple like an Hawaiian, meat lover's, and one day somewhere I stumbled across the Godfather (that's one you can't refuse - and why would you want to?)

I have never had a pizza that wasn't fantastic. That's where I stand on the issue, and yes, that includes stuff that I microwave at home. I've noticed that the pizza snobs often rave about the thinnest or most tasteless versions, perhaps simply because they are the most notable variations. I see all through that, but I do understand that variety brings a lot to such an item, different concentrations of ingredients make for different experiences, and a particular type of oven can produce a certain special charring or whatever...

Anyhow, leaving the poll aside for the moment, here is a video that reflects the true spirit of pizza, and even perhaps represents the proper mindset for its enjoyment (the normal speed version is in the list to the right, and I realize that a lot of you may have already seen Mary-Kate and Ashley do this at whichever speed but here it is for the rest of you.)
