I've read the first 12 chapters and now it seems that Tess knows that Alec (and his mother) isn't her relative. So, in what point did she come aware of this? English is not my native, or for some other reason I haven't found the spot where it's told. Please help me!

Tess isn't a 'who dunnit' sort of story so I don't think that bit of info will spoil it for anyone. It's really more of a small detail that completes a greater whole.
