although aesthetic and tasteful at times, I feel as though it's been overkill within the last decade in both mainstream and underground media, and has become most notable for intense irony, satire, and mockery, yet provides little or no room for progress
don't get me wrong, I still enjoy a good book or movie that goes against the grain, but a gem is usually one in a million
thoughts?

90% of all art is mediocre at best. The really brilliant accounts for far less than 1% This was as true in the past as it is now... although I suspect the loosened standards for who and what amounts to art has meant that a far greater portion of that 90% is truly bad now than at any other time. Terms like Modernism, Post-Modernism, Post-Post Modernism... even more specific isms such as Cubism and Impressionism are but vague concepts at best... attempts to categorize individual artists who are notorious for their ability to evade such categorization. If Borges, Calvino, Garcia-Marquez, Donald Barthleme, and Anne Carson count as Post-Modernists... then I'm all for it... but I'm always open to any alternative... done well.
