mmmmm... I don't know which to vote: the one by Bradbury I nominated or the one by David Foster Wallace. I hope they both win hehe...

Only about a week to go on voting... looks like Poe is in the lead but there is a 3-way tie between Checkov, Machen, and Bradbury that someone will need to break

This forum is great. Honestly, I pretty much work all day and rarely have time to discuss books or about anything academic...Lol. So you guys make a poll about which book to read for the next month and discuss it as soon as you finish reading it? I'm new, so a few tips would be welcomed

Went for Berenice as i probably already have it in my collected works of Poe, but have yet to read it unlike TFOTHOU.

"TFOTHOU!" said the lisping vegan.

Yea that's pretty much how it works, we do two short stories a month, currently we are reading Araby if you want to get in on that before the months out. There is also another forum dedicated to book of the month club, where one book is read each month and discussed.... it looks like for October the book will be Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy

I haven't read anything by Poe yet so it would be awesome to give him a chance :)

It'd be nice if the short story threads were temporarily stickied to make them easy to find.

Yeah, Poe's great..but I personally think The Fall House of Usher is a highly regarded work that most people have, at some point, read...It's well known, that's my point. Chekhov, on the other hand, is considered to be one of Russia's greatest short story writers. Yet his works have remained obscure to contemporary America, I don't know maybe I'm generalizing..I probably am, lol, Let's give Chekhov a chance though since I haven't read that story and am currently searching for it online.

I'd give the nod to Poe. Usher is a better conceived story than The Black Monk. What's interesting is that Chekov and Poe each only wrote one novel: The Shooting Party (Chekov) and The Narrarative of Arthur Gordon Pym (Poe).
The short stories of both authors are very much better than either novel. I've read both novels just to say I have read them, but there's not a lot to be gleaned from either.

Bitter Bierce hanging on by a thread

I haven't read The Fall of the House of Usher in ages. I used to think that was one of the few great Poe works. I can't remember it. It's time to re-read it. I hope it wins. :wink5:

Though I voted in September polls I was too busy to take part in the discussions on the two stories. Will try to join October discussions. I'm rather late but I still have a chance to vote. So I'll go for Chekhov because I like him and for Poe as he is already winning. I've read The Fall of the house of Usher some years back. Would like to discuss it here.

Hey, something strange happened. I voted for both Chekhov and Poe but it is taking only one vote instead of two. I wonder what went wrong!

I've only read The Tell-tale Heart so Poe winning one of the spots is marvellous

The Black Monk again and again

When is the poll closed? Looking forward to both of these, though i've read the Poe one before. Only just realised it's the top 2 stories and not just 1. Yay!

It's nice to know my nomination and the people's votes that helped it jointly win is leading to it being read.
