Where glacier greets sea
the crashing, calving flow
gives voice to every storm
that added to its stream,
replies to each stone
overturned by groaning ice,
and rings with the echoes
of the shearing squeal
of rock etching rock

Then asea,
as centuries bob
in new disquiet,
ice becomes the sea
and melts into the depths
of its own silence

How fine this is both as a testimony to the physical event you describe and to the metaphoric hints or allusions in it. Whether you intended the latter or not, the poem is proof that the presenting event must be credible first, in order for the symbolic references to be possible.

I'm reminded of an anecdote involving Flannery O'Connor. At a literary party where most of the other guests were secular, someone asked her about the symbolic meaning of the Eucharist, to which she answered:

"If it were just a symbol, I'd say 'To hell with it!'"

Stately, grand... a powerful poem that kind of sums up Life, "melted to its own silence". Beautiful, thanks - Bar

Brilliantly realised, hack.

There is an undercurrent (forgive the pun) of environmentalism to this, but remains that, and only finds slight expression in 'new disquiet'. It's perhaps to the poem's credit that this wasn't made more obvious or elaborate. Great first stanza, and I don't think I've read the word 'asea' before, but it works!
