Are there any Sven Hassel fans here?
I read his books when I was fairly little. I loved them. The are so lively , funny and full of tension. The main heroes are nazi soldiers, which sort of makes them anti-heroes, but they show great moral qualities, making them anti-anti heroes.
You can find out a lot of stuff, like the fact that some nazi soldiers lynched some of their stressful superiors. Other were pist off when , instead of food supplies , they received posters of Hitler, but eventually found a good use for it when going in the bushes.
The books are pretty violent (it’s war) but written with humor, and with a degree of realism .
They are pseudo-biographical none the less.
Some people claimed that Sven Hassel is actually Børge Villy Redsted Pedersen, a Danish Nazi who never served on the Russian front. And spent the majority of World War II in occupied Denmark and his knowledge of warfare comes second-hand from Danish Waffen SS veterans whom he met after the end of the war. Also that Hassel's first novel was ghostwritten and when it became a success, he employed his wife to write the rest of his books ( this part is from wikipedia).
But who cares what circumstances gave birth to this literary work! They are awesome!
