Oh night, with
stars spelling stars
at the universum wheel
what would your meaning be
had we not named you?

O sordid night of man
full of gaping screams
in the dark -
would they ever echo
were we not hearing them?

Anecdote of the spirit
turned (re-turned) into one.

Bar, you've done it again! I don't know how, but you have. So much thought in so few words.

Much respect.

Sweet Bar,

This is so Zen it leaves me giddy and disoriented! S1 is bewildering and S2 seems suffused with so much anguish... The screams would still sound even if there were no ears to hear them, but to echo they need a mind to bounce off.

I remember the story about the kingdom of the blind. The one eyed man was not king, he was a heretic, and hounded from the land.

Live and be well, H

Thanks Daf and Hawk, were it not for the mind, there wouldn't have been screams (screams the poem intends), well, perhaps.
And I wonder, Hawk, what anguish? only a presence that would probably do with a trifle of humbleness.

Grateful for your comments.

Be well - I am now leaving to wander the streets just enough to eavesdrop on the night's musings :smile5: Bar

Since this was dedicated to me, for which I thank you, I feel I ought to have something apropos to say, but alas I don't. The miracle - if it is that - is that living, as it appears to me we do, in different universes we can nevertheless hear each other; but of course there is no way to be sure that we truly do!

PM, I wrote my little poem after having HEARD yours and in line with it: sort of an emphasis, though with my own colours; but since you were unable to hear mine, and since it evidently irritates you more than it pleases you, I'll hurry to erase the dedication, with an apology, and will let my little thought live and prosper on its own. As to the UNIVERSE, I suggest study the word's etymology.

For the record: I was in no way "irritated" by your poem, neither its contents nor its dedication to me, now sadly removed.

Some philosophical similarities with hack's poem 'Ann' (or vice versa) in the naming of things. Nice thoughtful piece; I like the

stars spelling stars
although I'm no fan of apostrophes (in the 'Oh night!' sense) and for me the second stanza comes a bit too close to the old addage about 'does a falling tree make a sound if there is no-one around to hear it?' Oh, and...

Nice phrase! Is there a poem that could fit into?

Very philosophical, Zen-like, and Buddhistic!

this really put my mind into high gear...

the idea of stars and universe and spirit returning to one, I can't help but feel a sense of divinity, especially with the trinity of three stanzas.

and the screaming in the universe — a rude awakening, so unexpected following the beauty in the naming of stars. Almost immediately the trailer of Alien flashed in front of me: In space no one can hear you scream....

There is so much in this little poem, and so memorable.

Belated but great thanks for your kind comments B/V, Angli and Haunted!
Sorry for the apostrophes, B/V, but it was this "Oh" that introduced me into my poem. I didn't know the adage you allude to before, though the idea is familiar of course. My S2 took a bit different a direction, I think.

(plus - I'm listing my "nice phrasing" you notice for me! ;) thanks!)

Haunted, there is the raw roar of the universes (mentioned in ancient sources, by philosophers etc...), but the screams I allude to are man-provoked. We name and hear; by naming we acknowledge our responsibility as conscient beings, by hearing we commit to perfecting, evolving what is in our influence zone, so that the screams may cease...; eventually, the human spirit is pivotal to the universal oneness. Well, as long as that spirit has being and if itself is not an anecdote only (and even then, for is not an anecdote a kind of being too?)...
Anyhow, I'm happy it was a memorable moment for you.

Best to you all - Bar
