My little furry friend
looking 'bout for food
scurrying up and down
search ends up no good

you keep me company
while the others are at work
here we sit and slumber
aboard the old Grand Turk

some call this adventure
some refer to this as home
many believe that this is hell
a fancy wooden tomb

but soon I will be lifted up
with the tackle and the rig
because I hit an officer
for now I'm in the brig

What a nice piece! It reminds of the tall ships of yore at yonder seas :p It's a clever description of the ways of life on them, where your only friend could easily be a tiny furry creature, which in turn reminded me of Mr. Jingles, the mouse in The Green Mile, by Stephen King. Though that story is set in a prison, I feel strong enough similarities with the life aboard a ship... a prison of its own class

I love that movie quite badly, by the way.

The nimbleness of it sets us up for the grimness of the conclusion.

It's a clever description of life tout court! Subtly brought to its true "face"! Thanks, Bar

Knowing that hitting an officer led to a flogging round the fleet, ie 24 lashes on each ship, the subject was unlikely to survive. Highly unlikely. That makes his light-heartedness all the more poignant, which then makes the whole poem more powerful and effective. Keep it going Bien, brilliant stuff!
