Charlie Four Two

"Cranwell - Charlie Four Two."
"Four Two. Take-off."
The ear-shattering roar,
The vibration, Straining.
Brakes off - rolling.
Flashing white lights underneath,
Red, either side,
Snapping by ever faster.
Rotate - Nose up. Flying.

The jolting stops, the noise decreases.
Milk the flaps up gently, throttle back, cruising,
Delicate turn to Starboard,
The stars above as you climb in to the night sky.
Idle chat on the intercomm.
"That's S****horpe down there. Look at the glow
from the steelworks."
Over Sheffield, more orange glow, polluted clouds,
Then clear, dark, empty skies.
Rolling lazily around the area, playing,
As you check the weather.
"Cranwell, Four Two,
Visibility Plus 20,
Cloud Base, Cloud tops,
Alto Cumulus, Density"
All that they need to know.
Another slow, gentle turn over the English countryside,
Flying easily back to Lincoln.
The sun is starting to show itself above the horizon.
Another glorious sunrise, another glorious day.

Nose Down,
Throttles wide open,
Four Hundred,
Vibrations,
Dials Blurred.
"Four Two, downwind, Finals."
"Four Two clear to land,
Surface wind 110, 4 knots,"

Roll lazily along the perimeter,
And watch the sun rise.
Another glorious sunrise, another glorious day.
The sun rose twice for me today.

You could tell Scunny and Sheff dead easy from the air in the dark, becasue of the steelworks. And the distorted cloud formations. Fell in love with the Peak District on those flights. That particular one was 23rd June 1977.

Thanks, chum!

And "you" rose twice to the sunrise... I appreciate the vigour of this piece, Dafy, and your vivid description made me experience the flight! For which - many thanks - Bar

love the radio sequence opening. when my dad was dying, I bought him a model spitfire aeroplane to assemble. I was hoping the sort of stuff you have just written would go through his head as he glued and painted each segment....

OK, reduce me to tears! What a lovely memory - thanks for that! If it resonates with just one person, it's been worth it!

lol. he didn't even open the box. said the glue was probably toxic and would make him ill...wonder where that model plane is now?

Lovely, my favourite part was...

Roll lazily along the perimeter,
And watch the sun rise.
Another glorious sunrise, another glorious day.
The sun rose twice for me today.

Marvellous how you incorporated the technical chatter with the poetic descriptions of what could be seen. "The sun rose twice" is of course a beautiful conclusion.
