A Hermit Crab

When very small,
I wondered
why you carried a tower
on your back
wherever you travelled.

Getting older,
I knew
it was your borrowed house
in a sandy beach
beside the ocean expanse.

Now it dawns
on me
we are nothing but
migrating birds
taking the seasonal journey
without a home.
