I'm curious if anyone has an opinion about translations of Notre Dame de Paris into English. I'm reading Hapgood's translation on-line with my husband. More specifically, he reads to me while I cook supper.
Hapgood's translation is very old. 19th century. But the translation seems excellent to me. I have a hard copy of the Signet Classic version translated by Walter Cobb, (copyright 1965) at home. But I think I prefer Hapgood's rendition, although I'm not an expert in deciding which translation is better.
Or is there another version that anybody would recommend? We prefer a book in the hand, but not if it isn't a good translation.
We've been doing this for a few years. We did Les Miserables last, and Anna Karennina before that. We often do translations. Though one of our faves was Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole.
