There's not that much of a plot- two sisters, Ursula and Gudrun, marry two men who are best friends, Rupert Birkin and Gerald Crich (although bizarrely Rupert pretty much always is referred to by his last name and Gerald is pretty much always referred to just by his first name). The relationships contrast- Birkin is passionate whilst Gerald is violent.

The novel tends to get bogged down in philosophy. Whilst it raises some interesting questions about love, the philosophical parts make the novel drag.

The best, most interesting bit of the book is the scene where Birkin and Gerald wrestle naked. How Lawrence got that past an obscenity trial is a mystery.

I think Lawrence's descriptions always carried his weaker works. I liked it less than Sons and Lovers. I remember the expansive descriptions of Australia in Kangaroo - but I lost interest in the political aspects of it.

It is a philosophic novel, but it's still great. This is Lawrence at his complete world view. It's usually considered his finest work and though it's not my favorite Lawrence work it probably does reach his most profound. This novel is Lawrence as Doestevskian. It's a must read.

I loved this book, I still think that The Rainbow in my opinion is Lawrence's best novel, but this one comes in a close 2nd.

I'm with you Dark Muse. I didn't know you read The Rainbow.

I mentioned it way back when, when I first started joining in on the D.H. Lawrence short story group.

LOL though I thought I was the only one who actually preferred The Rainbow over Sons and Lovers.

I'm afraid I don't remember. The Rainbow is my favorite Lawrence too.

I felt like I was reading the worst of Virginia Woolf, the only author I have never been able to finish. I always finish the books I purchase, and I have a copy of Sons and Lovers which I will try next. I saw the movie of this one with the English actor Trevor Howard (Mutiny on yhe Bounty, The Third Man), which I enjoyed so I'm Looking for better things.

I read this a little while back and found the pace to slow at times. It is beautifully written with some light philosophical parts. I did find Lawrence can be verbose.
