This character is in the opening lines of Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by R.L. Stevenson, I liked him right away.
"Mr. Utterson the lawyer was a man of a rugged counternance, that was never lighted by a smile ; cold, scanty and embarrassed in discourse ; back-ward in sentiment ; lean, long, dusty, dreary, and yet somehow loveable."
This novel is well worth the read, even though you think you know the story.
A well regarded classic.
