"You were my greatest creation"

You were my greatest creation,
the pièce de résistance of the many
products of my imagination.
Out of your legs I have crafted strong foundations of white stone,
Out of your arms I have made gentle, sloping arches,
Out of your hair I have designed a brilliant façade of circular pillars,
Out of your lips I have adorned with white marble figures,
Our of your words I have divined some testament or scripture,
Out of your eyes I have fashioned some stained-glass windows of dazzling green.
I have made of you a glorious cathedral,
where daily I have laid my prayers and words of praise.

But perhaps you are not such a grand basilica.
Perhaps you are not the Notre Dame de Paris,
nor even the Duomo di Siena.
Perhaps you are merely the corner chapel
in some dusty, unpopulated town
where church attendance is low.

For though the darkness left behind
in the void of your leaving
has had me imagine you a great
candelabra adorning some midnight
ball or reception,
the putting out of some great chandelier
and the snuffing out of a single candle
leaves nothing but the same darkness.
