View Full Version : How to write short stories?

I stopped writing these when I started senior school, so I have no idea where (or how) to begin. I'd be grateful for any advice on length, plot/subject matter, pacing etc. My main problem is how to write something that goes beyond description and forms a 'plot arc'. Something with suspense and a satisfying conclusion that will hold the reader's interest.
I'd also be grateful for any recommendations of good short stories (20th-21st century).
Thanks. :)

Read James Joyce's Dubliners, Hemingway's short stories, Raymond Carver, Alice Munro, John Cheever, etc. etc.
I agree with minstrelbard, reading a variety of short stories is probably the best way to get a grasp of how to write one. You may notice they vary, in length, style, voice and subject.
So, in general a short story is a story that has a beginning, the story's conflict details, climax and dénouement without requiring subsequent chapters to do so. With regards to the plot arc, practice is my only advice. Sometimes I find it is easier to edit than to write, so write your story and then tighten it afterwards, but again, practice.
