I lost my original avatar and now I am looking for a new one. I've found some and need your advice to decide. If you send me your pictures I will be thankful as well.

Here are some pictures I was thinking of:

I lost my original avatar and now I am looking for a new one. I've found some and need your advice to decide. They are both nice, but you should consider this note: The maximum size of your custom image is 100 by 100 pixels

My advice would be to have a look at your pictures in 100 by 100 before you decide. They may look very different.

Olga,

Could you please post these images as thumbnails? They are too big for the Forum pages.

Thanks.

I have found something, which reflects my personality more, yet not completely. I really love cats, especially Russian Blue breed. Though it doesn't express my complete personality.

True, BrianBean, all cats are adorable. I have a fat, black cat: adorable. I have a cat that I thought was a tabby, but now I think he's at least part Maine Coon, and I have a cat that looks like a Blue Russian. She and the erstwhile tabby had kittens, one of whom could pass for a pureblood Sealpoint Siamese. He certainly has the temperment and the crossed eye.

Sometimes I ask myself why I love them so much. They are only animals with soft fur and sharp nails. Mammals like mice or dogs, though we love them so much. Why?
I have three cats - one of them is black, the other is dark gray and the third looks like Russian blue. His character is similar to Russian blue: 'Each hair silver dipped before attaching to the cat... with short hair and green eyes. They are fine boned and long bodied. The distinct color and coat stands out as does their normally affectionate nature. They are normally quiet, somewhat shy cats but with those they know and trust are very devoted and affectionate.' - it's all about my cat Panteleimon but he is a simple street cat maybe he read the description of Russian blue on internet and decided to behave like a pedigree cat? Or maybe he inherited these qualities through genes of one of his ancestors, who knows?
You can see his picture in my thread Pictures of pets.

First of all a little correction - claws instead of nails - I apologize for my English. Second why only felines are masterpieces? All God's creatures, even rats and spiders are masterpieces aren't they? Though some people idolize cats and my question is WHY CATS?

Yes why cats indeed. First it was Brian (corrected his error now though I see thankfully) and now you are choosing a damn cat, I hate cats they make me sneeze and get in the way! Why not choose something better than a cat - or indeed any animal at all for that matter?

Oh and Max - a pair of earphones, what's the thinking behind that? Why not a yogurt pot or a stapler? I ask merely out of curiosity...

Feeling a little cranky today, Neely? Oscar Wilde liked cats, too, did you know that?

LitNetIsGreat
08-07-2010, 05:40 PM
No, no I'm not cranky, I just don't like cats or, actually more accurately really, the thought of having to look after them - or any pet for that matter - far too much trouble! I don't mind cats that much as long as they keep out of my way.

Really you think Wilde liked cats? I'm not sure either way, I don't think he was a particular cat lover - he certainly wouldn't have chosen an animal as an avatar (again no offense) - I'd have thought he was indifferent to them. Do share an opinion otherwise, especially if you have his words on the matter though.

Neely, maybe you didn't notice but my question was mostly figurative. I love cats I am just wondering why mankind domesticated a cat not, for example, a mouse or squirrel or some other wild animal?

I am always wondering how can somebody hate a God's creature a cat or a spider, a dog or a rat? You can dislike or fear a spider but why hate? You can dislike a cat but why hate? Each creature on our Earth plays it's role.
People can be much more disgusting than a rat. An animal can't be base, mean, despicable.

LitNetIsGreat

Maybe hate was a strong word, let's replace that with the phrase "completely indifferent" (though if they set me off sneezing I'm not happy).

Overall, I just can't be doing with pets: more hassle, more money = no joy, I'm not interested, and that's it in a nutshell.

I also dislike some pet owners too, as all they seem to talk about is the damn thing, what it did, what it didn't do etc, etc, really quite dull stuff, I'm not interested. I don't like it when you go around to someone's house and they have a dog that jumps up at you, licking your fingers and smelling. You end up leaving with hairs all over your jeans too. What's all that about?

No, I like animals from a distance. I would readily go to zoos and whatnot, but I wouldn't want to live in one.

I like horses to a degree, they are probably my favourite animal; they are quite graceful and majestic looking creatures, but then again on no level would I want the trouble of keeping one, unless I could afford to pay someone else to clean out the stables, then perhaps I would consider it. I could ride around and pretend to be in a Jane Austen novel, so that would work I suppose.

I don't know why the cat and human thing came into being, maybe the cats just found that they could have a free ride with human beings, that they would feed them and look after them for nothing in return? Spiders aren't really of the same kind. They don't strike me as very domesticated.

Are you sure you want a cat as an avatar, can't I talk you out of it?

Let me tell you. A few weeks ago I was talking to someone with whom I thought we had a great understanding, until I realized how wrong I was. To say it in figurative terms, the person in question wasn't listening to the same music I was listening to, as though I had the headphones on instead of the loudspeakers. As a result, my music apparently "sounded silent", like my user title states at this moment, so when I finally realized about this incompatibility, I decided to commemorate such an awakening of mine by choosing the corresponding image, plus matching user title. It may not make much sense to everyone, but at the time it seemed good imagery to me :frown2: I hope it's clear now. However, I'm soon to change it again, since my moods are somewhat fluctuating lately.

Because we can't hold and feel other species in the same way as we can with cats. Also, cats are more sociable than many other creatures and more attractive visually.
This is true. I used to have a few rabbits at home, and I liked them very much, and all in all they were nice in their moods, except when I wanted to hold them. Rabbits just don't like being held.

Each creature on our Earth plays it's role. People can be much more disgusting than a rat. An animal can't be base, mean, despicable.
True too. Let's suppose for a moment, and it's just a supposition without giving names, that we have as many despicable humans as we have despicable animals. Under such a scenario, despicable people's role is to be despicable just because they feel like, when they could govern themselves on a different direction, if they really wanted to. On the other hand, a despicable animal has a better reason to be: its ungovernable nature.

I also dislike some pet owners too, as all they seem to talk about is the damn thing, what it did, what it didn't do etc, etc, really quite dull stuff, I'm not interested. Agreed again, and let's remember pet owners who open their doors so that their pets could freely go do their "business" in the neighbors' gardens next door. Easiest method to keep the house clean from their own pets. They just pick the neighbors' gardens as pet toilets, without paying a fee for it.

Agree with you, I feel the same when people talk about their kids or grandkids showing their pictures, talking how talented they are and you must show interest and say 'Oh, what a nice child!' meanwhile you are looking for an excuse to finish this dull conversation

I would like to express my disagreement with you about this. You probably don't know but cats sense the mood of their owner and hurry to comfort them, showing more affection. I know it is a dull conversation for you but you should know that cat is a mysterious creature, even scientists don't know all about cats.

Olga, Olga, Olga, tut, tut. You see I got to the end of your post and all the time I thought it was Brian shouting down at me in a bad mood (he had a cat avatar before you see) it's all terribly confusing for me - I was about to say "easy on Brian there old pal" but then I realised it wasn't him speaking at all. This is one of the problems I have when people change their avatars all the time - it disturbs me somewhat, it's very confusing for me you know.

Yes but poppy blossom doesn't jump up at you, rub again your leg and get in the way!

Indeed, but it is noble laziness. While I save time and money by not mucking out animals or taking dogs for walks at 6am in the frost I'm doing other things, much more rewarding things like drinking fresh coffee or reading.

I would like to express my disagreement with you about this...

Oh, OK, OK, it's too early, I'm sure cats have some redeeming features, but the one my mum owned when I was younger simply took advantage of our hospitality. You would never see the damn thing in summer, but in the winter it would steal the best spot in front of the fire (and make me sneeze) it treated our house like a hotel and didn't pay into the bargain!

Ha, ha so underneath that hard exterior there is a smile after all breaking through the clouds. OK, I don't want to push you to change your avatar, we all have to make our own choices in life, good or bad, right or wrong, but there is always something better out there in the realms of art. Good luck in your hunting!

I feel pity for you, you are lacking in the opportunity of enjoying the company of an animal. I guess you heard that these little creatures help people to overcome depression, normalize blood pressure and improve our emotional level. But as I see it is not your choice and you can't change it. However, I have personally met people who changed their attitudes toward cats - love for animals can be infectious - so be aware of it.

You can be drinking coffee and reading with sleeping cat in your lap - sounds like a nightmare to you :-) doesn't it?

Almost forgot to say that you used the cat to keep mice away from your house and he used you in return. So maybe you had to pay him for being on duty 24/7. Just calculate a little, where those leftovers and a little place next to the fire equal for his hard working struggling and fighting mice sacrificing his free time? Who took advantage?

I don't know why the cat and human thing came into being, maybe the cats just found that they could have a free ride with human beings, that they would feed them and look after them for nothing in return?

The human/cat relationship came into being at the dawn of civilisation in ancient Egypt. The Egyptians stored their grain in warehouses but soon found that it was being ruined by mice. Then they discovered that cats could catch the mice and save them from starvation. They worshiped cats as gods and it was forbidden to kill one on pain of death. If you go to the Vatican in Rome, among the many treasures there you can find a mummified cat, because the Egyptians also treated their cats like their kings.
You are right about cats leaving fur on your clothes but it's a small price to pay for the joy of seeing them curled up on your lap and to hear them purring with pleasure at the thought that they have such an accommodating master.

Brian, I think Neely knows about it, like most of people do. Those who don't like cats just don't care about Egyptians and their mumificated cats. I tolerate if somebody don't like cats all I want is to understand WHY. Why a part of mankind loves or even adores cats the other dislikes or even hates?
I understand that in Middle Age superstitious people feared cats but now...

That's why I use this picture as my avatar. I wish I could partying every day like a teenager!

Talking seriously - she /your cat/ didn't have to be around the house all the time, it was enough that mice felt her smell in the house and didn't dare to enter it. I am a catologist :-) and know much about cats - I have 3 cats at the moment watch and observe them. Plus I used to bring up kitties replacing their mother when people just throw them in the tray and my friends found them before they died of starvation among trash. It would be more human to kill them then to leave them dying slowly. Some people leave dogs tied to a tree in the woods or leave a box with puppies along the highway. Now you know why I prefer to protect animals.

Olga, I found a couple of sites hosting a few royalty-free feline-related pictures, in case you like any of them. Some are repeated across sites though. Here they are:

Thank you Maximilianus! I spent more than one hour looking at these images . I love them all! However I decided to keep my present cat image for a while (it looks like my cat Panteleimon), when I get bored with it
I will change for some mad tiger or so.

I have an avatar that I would like to use, but have no idea how to add it. If I go to My Profile and then go to View Profile I get to a page which has a lot of squiggles in each like Title Text Color #3e3e3e. Is this the page I need to add an avatar? How would I do that?

Hi, Dreamwoven. You'd click on "Settings" at the top right of the screen, then "Edit Avatar" on the left.
