View Full Version : I need some help on teaching my son.
Hi, I am home-schooling my son, and the assignment that I recently found was about the book "Farenheit 451". I myself have not read this book but still need questions for him. I found these on the internet but can't for the life of me figure out some of these answers. Thanks so much!!
1. How does Guy Montag feel about his job in the beginning of the novel?
2.What is so different about Clarisse and her Family? How does meeting her affect Montag?
3. What Pivotal question does Clarisse ask Montag? How is this important to the plot?
4. What does the term antisocial mean and what does it mean in Montags society? To whom is the term applied?
5. Contrast Clarisse and Mildred, what imagery Is used to stress out their differences?
6. Describe the bedroom Montag enters, whom does the setting characterize? Why is this significant?
7. What happens to Mildred. Why is this significant?
8. Describe Montag and Mildred's relationship. Why does Montag think his feelings would be if his wife were to die? Why is this important?
9. How does Montag change after the fire at the old woman's house?
10. Describe Beatys visit to Montag. What's Beatys rationale for burning books?
11. Compare and Contrast Montag and Beaty
12. What is the meaning of "The Sieve and the Sand"?
13. Why does Montag go to see Faber. Describe their visit.
14. What three things do Faber say are missing from society ? Explain what he means by each
15. Describe Mildred and her friends conversation. What is their view on family, war, and life in general?
16. How do Mildreds friends respond to the poem Montag reads? Why do you think they responded so strongly?
17. Who flipped the alarm at Montag's house and how does he feel about it/burning his house down.
18. Would you describe Montags burnng of Beaty as murder? Do you think Beaty wanted him to? Give reasons for your answer.
19. Why do you think Bradbury describes the capture of Montags scapegoat?
20. What are Montags impressions on the land across the river? How do these scenes of nature contrast with the scenes of the novel set in the city?
21. What was Grangers philosophy on life, taught to him by his grandfather and passed to Montag?
22. What do the book people do? How will Montag help them?
23. What is the promise at the end of the novel? Does it end in hope or despair? Give reasons for your answer.
Thanks so much! I really want to improve his literary knowledge!

Why would you teach something to your kid that you don't know? The book can be read in a day. Read it. It's one of my favorite books ever.

Agree. How can one teach something that one doesn't know? Read it and then answer the questions.
Simples.
Please, my husband and I are going through a big rough spot in our lives. We are doing our best to work out of it. When I'm not helping my son. I'm working
I really need these, please.

Does anyone else smell "homework"?
I was thinking the exact same Sche.
Ok listen... I have NO free time in my life. It's either helping my son. Or working. I came on here to ask for some help. I found these questions randomly on the interenet.
Respect me or not. I really need help

I believe I speak logically and for everyone here if I say that, on principle, on this forum, we do not solve homework questions.
I find it a little easy to come on here and say, even if it is true, that one is teaching one's children and then to ask us to effectually do one's work. If one's child was in a school, we wouldn't expect the teacher to do so either, despite there being a lot of crap teachers about...
That is why I think what I think about homeschooling, which we are not going to discuss here.
It's not long, it's not difficult, so read it and then solve the questions.
Read it in bed.

...on top of which....
If you've found the questions, why not get your son to read the book and answer them?

If you spend a bit of time reading the book whilst your son is doing other assingments, you might find it a good compromise. Alternatively, bathroom/bus/train/tram reading. Presumably, if he is that far advanced, he can be left to his own devices for considerable periods of time.
My life is in a spiraling downfall. I need help. I can't find an answer guide for me to use for reference with my son.
I don't have any free time. I'm sorry.
I need help. If you can help me. Please post here. If not. Please think about what I'm going through an show some compassion and don't post things you cannot prove

Could you not perhaps find assignments about books you have read? I mean, even if we provided answers to these questions (which are prone to subjective readings - your son's answers may differ from ours), your son may then ask further questions of you, and you will not be in any position to answer.
I'm going to read the book with him. But I want to know these answers so I can point out certain sections and help him. I've heard many good things about this book. Please. I don't have any time to spare in my life

I'm pretty surprised at how heartless some posters are. I've read the novel recently and while I don't know all the answers I have supplied you with the ones that I do know. I hope it helps.. and all the best to you and your family, I know how hard it can be.
1. How does Guy Montag feel about his job in the beginning of the novel?
Heedless Love for it
2.What is so different about Clarisse and her Family? How does meeting her affect Montag?
Clarisse is black, and Montag's racial prejudices are revealed
3. What Pivotal question does Clarisse ask Montag? How is this important to the plot?
If every family were black but him would he like it if they treated him the way that he treats her? It is the moment of Montags epiphany
4. What does the term antisocial mean and what does it mean in Montags society? To whom is the term applied?
Antisocial in this context means accepting other races as equal.
5. Contrast Clarisse and Mildred, what imagery Is used to stress out their differences?
I'm not exactly sure on this one... sorry
6. Describe the bedroom Montag enters, whom does the setting characterize? Why is this significant?
Don't know this one either
7. What happens to Mildred. Why is this significant?
A car runs over her foot breaking it. She is bedridden for a time and her husband has to take care of her, which allows them to mend their somewhat distant relationship
8. Describe Montag and Mildred's relationship. Why does Montag think his feelings would be if his wife were to die? Why is this important?
They have a distant relationship until it is mended by his caretaking of her. If she were to die he says he himself would want to and might commit suicide
9. How does Montag change after the fire at the old woman's house?
He begins to embrace all people regardless of race or income, as equals.
10. Describe Beatys visit to Montag. What's Beatys rationale for burning books?
Sorry don't remember.
11. Compare and Contrast Montag and Beaty
Don't know.
12. What is the meaning of "The Sieve and the Sand"?
Don't know
13. Why does Montag go to see Faber. Describe their visit.
Faber turns out to be Montags grandfather who is still instilled with racial prejudices. He goes to help dissolve his own prejudices by getting at the root of them.
14. What three things do Faber say are missing from society ? Explain what he means by each
Don't remember
15. Describe Mildred and her friends conversation. What is their view on family, war, and life in general?
Dont know
16. How do Mildreds friends respond to the poem Montag reads? Why do you think they responded so strongly?
The poem expresses equality which runs counter to the mores of their society, which is why they respond so strongly.
17. Who flipped the alarm at Montag's house and how does he feel about it/burning his house down.
Mildred. He deeply regrets its burning.
18. Would you describe Montags burnng of Beaty as murder? Do you think Beaty wanted him to? Give reasons for your answer.
Don't know
19. Why do you think Bradbury describes the capture of Montags scapegoat?
Not sure
20. What are Montags impressions on the land across the river? How do these scenes of nature contrast with the scenes of the novel set in the city?
Nature is the great equalizer. The animals and trees and streams and mountains all live in harmony. Evil and prejudice are a human creation so natures acts as a foil for society.
21. What was Grangers philosophy on life, taught to him by his grandfather and passed to Montag?
Live and let live.
22. What do the book people do? How will Montag help them?
Don't know
23. What is the promise at the end of the novel? Does it end in hope or despair? Give reasons for your answer.
The promise is that all people will mirror nature and shed off the bigoted vestments of society.
Thank you soo much! I will try and work out the few with my son. You have no idea how much this helps.
I hope the best for everything you do!

Send him to a public school if you can't help him, you must be out of your mind if your childs education is based off asking people from a forum to answer questions
This is the only time I have ever resorted to a forum. I just want the best for him. If u have a kid you would understand...

This is the only time I have ever resorted to a forum. I just want the best for him. If u have a kid you would understand...
I do, and I completely understand that impulse. In that spirit, might I suggest that perhaps it would be best for him - and for you too, given all you have to do - if he went to a regular school? I think the state is probably obliged to provide a place if you ask for one. The thing is, you have to earn a living, run the house, get through the rough spot you're in - and teaching a child is a fulltime job. You don't have the qualifications or the time to teach a kid all the subjects necessary to a rounded education. Why would you?
So it might be worth considering whether it would be best for him simply to go to school, assuming that he has no other issues that would prevent that.
I might consider it. The thing is we live very far away and I'm considering it. We probably will. We want him to make a desicion and understand that school is alot different than homeschooling and that since I'm busy. I won't be able to help him

Talk about mean. Aced, I think you should know that the answers Rores28 posted are completely wrong. Farheinheit 451 is a book about censorship and a dystopian future in which books are burned. The character Clarisse is repeatedly described as someone whose white face glows pale like the moon. I'm running right now, so I can't post much at the moment, but I thought someone should tell you because I get the sense that you're honestly struggling here.

Almost had me there Aced, but you protest just a shade too much  I actually do have two small children, and if I were to receive this kind of a "warm" welcome then I would have left instead of arguing. You smack of a little too much desperation, and it seems Scher already knows your game. I'll give credit where it is due, I don't think I've seen anyone quite go to these lengths for homework help. You certainly could have read the book or the Cliff's notes more quickly than all this.

Good luck with your son's education, all the best.

Aced, if you are so busy, and have no time to do anything, might one suggest that spending a lot of time discussing religion and threatening us all with hell-fire might be better employed on educating your offspring? Only a thought, you understand. One wants to see the right thing done for the poor boy.

Thanks for all your help! I'm slowly figuring out the other questions, thanks again Rores!

What I've never understood is why these internecine conflicts are in any way relevant. In the 13 years I've been online it never ceases to amaze me how some form of McCarthyism rears its head to stigmatize individuals in an environment where by default we're all anonymous, and the times where I've let it get to me I've allowed it to hurt, which is why I've never truly been at ease in any community, and this sort of does it for me.
My contempt has been such that people were frightened and I was driven off, only to observe more dubious behaviors elsewhere, and twitter is a particularly good example of that. But there is no crime here where Aced has to be called out, other than trying to make a poor attempt to coast, if that's the case, and so what? She can go to any number of sites and buy a cheat sheet. That type of thing is rampant with today's technology.
All this does for me is confirm that I should have made my vacation permanent, otherwise too weary to look back in anger.

I don't think it's the attempt to get us to do the homework that's raised hackles. It's the heartstring-twanging deception. People tend to react strongly to being scammed - and the general perception is that that's what's happening.

Aced, people are totally willing to help you with your homework, as long as you show you are going to make a real effort. Plenty would be happy to talk about the questions with you, but first tell us what you think the answers are. It does you no service to just have the answers spoon fed to you.
Also, it needs to be reiterated that Rores was playing a prank on you, all the answers he gave you were very very wrong.
