I have found a secondhand copy of his collected essays, but I'm not sure whether to buy them. How good a writer would you say he was? I'm not interested in his christianity, more his literary criticism.

He's well worth reading - you don't have to agree with him, of course, but no one will deny that he was an excellent academic. Plus, it can be very hard to get certain copies of his academic work - generally second-hand bookshops are all you have to rely on. So long as it's reasonably priced, I'd go for it!
