His name is Dr Palm Off
a simple brain knows why
He claims he's academic
but Dr Palm Off often lies

He taps the school funding
for silly research trips
while students wait forever
for grades and learning tips

such luck is not forthcoming
even though they've paid
Dr Palm off is too busy
can't we all just wait?

while he studies man's achievements
in the hope he'll get a look
by standing in fame's glow
he might pen a winning book

Dr Palm Off yearns glory
he thinks being on campus
is utterly gory.

So now I want a refund
and a grade for my distress
but the school can't find
the Palm Off
we're sorry, they confess

I must now write a letter
to the Dean who I suspect
is friends with Dr Palm Off
and no doubt will protect
the academic facade
of a non-teaching teach
while students pay good money
for goals that won't be reached.

smash the system Delta. Kill Palm off.
I sensed a bit of bile in your lyrics.

bile was just an ingredient! Can't wait to graduate so I don't have to deal with people in la la land

Don't want to rain on your parade, but graduating won't prevent that. they're everywhere - every organisation has a few. However, keep writing stuff like that, and it shouldn't get to you too much. Liked it immensely. Super-cynical, too, and I approve of that!

Does Dr. Off perhaps have a sister named Screw?

Nicely done.

lol. Thanks everyone. I received a rather sharp reply from the Dean when I dared to question the integrity of Dr Palm Off concerning his handling of my 'learning process' I assume they are friends.....:-)

Liked this so much..... and as Dafydd says, the gravy train rolls on and on, wherever there's a free holiday to be had (for research purposes) or a junket (spreading cultural harmony) or even a paid day off (teacher training day) it has become an excuse to waste public funds. Come the revolution.....

He sounds like a most unreliable fellow (groan) You have my sympathy. I refer you to my song of revolution. I'll see you at the barricades. Best, H

Ah, the frustration that accompanies many a student's life! There's a biting sardonic quality to this which adds rather than detracts from the comic effect. That the meter is a little "off" in a line or two can be forgiven. The character's name is inspired, although yours fooly is trying not to think about dirty jokes with that phrase.

Even though one of the cardinal rule is to keep oneself out of the writing (cf: T.S. Eliot), often it is righteous anger or passion that tweaks the creative muscle. Sometimes we do our best writing when we're p.o.'ed about something, especially when we take the personal issue and try to give it a broader appeal. This is why this particular piece is so enjoyable.

I've always enjoyed reading your work! Please post some more.
