I strongly dislike the stones (the fact that they look like re-animated corpses has a lot to do with it).

The Who hands down!
In fact it was The Who’s seminal performance of “A Quick One” at the Rolling Stones “Rock and Roll Circus”, that caused the Stones to shelve the film until much later.

I admire the Stones musical and cultural merit, but The Who touches me much more personally. That said, one I cherish more than both; The Kinks. (And of course good ole' John, Paul, George and Ringo tower above all.)
That said, rarely has music been as well used in cinema as the Stones in Scorsese's films.

When it comes to innovation, it's hard to argue with Tommy and Quadrophenia. That doesn't mean I never liked the Stones - I had to because my big sister was a Beatles fan and hated them - but a combination of Pete Townshend's genius, Roger Daltrey's sheer presence and energy, Keith Moon's lunatic but unsurpassed drumming and John Entwhistle's straight-faced spectre hanging over it all has, in mine own humble opinion, never been beaten.

And what about him?

He's quite unparalleled in terms of music

I picked The Who, mostly because I like Tommy and I really just get bored to death by The Stones.

What, how can The Who be beating the Stones? There's something wrong here.

There's an opening there for a terrible joke about Mods, but I won't!

Oh, I'd agree with that though yes.

I had voted for the stones because personally i think they are way superior and The Who annoy the hell out of me. I loathe Tommy and dont get me started on Quadrophenia!

It's got to be The Stones becase I like more of their stuff, and Shelter, Brown Sugar and Sympathy with the Devil are amongst my favourites.
Having said that, I'd rather listen than watch and I can't understand the slavish adoration these people get for basically doing a job for which they are handsomely paid.

They are both so ubiquitous it's hard to pick a favorite.

Though I love The Who too, the Stones are the greatest rock and roll band in history. At their peak 1968 through 1972, they were unparralled. Get the five albums between those years: Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Get Your Ya-Yas Out, Sticky Fingers, and Exile On Mainstreet, and you have the very best of rock and roll. Oh and add the single, "Jumping Jack Flash" since it did not come out on an album. People who are sour on the Stones usually have their post 1972 years in mind, when drugs and age really caught up with them. Even then they have had many moments of brilliance.
By the way, Pete Townsend of the Who agrees with that. He has called them the greatest rock band.
This has got to be one of the greatest songs ever:

Yes I agree, I also think that they some good moments in the 90s with the albums Voodoo Lounge and Bridges to Babylon too. I think that if some of those songs were on the earlier albums they would have achieved a greater status.
I remember there was a time when they were getting slated for still touring. Many people were saying that they were too old, for me that was just nonsense - if you are still good enough then you are still good enough and age doesn't come into. I saw them at the Bridges to Babylon tour (2002 ish, I can't remember) and they proved that they still had it then for sure.

Whilst being a big Who fan, one thing is odd. Keith Moon was, indeed, a brilliant rock and R&B drummer, whilst Charlie Watts is brilliant in any field, especially blues, jazz and, amazingly, big band. Still love "I'm the One", though!
