Greetings fellow scribes. I hereby challenge you, one and all, to write a one word poem. The rule is simple. No hyphenated words,, that's cheating. German compound nouns are allowed though :D

The idea is that you choose a word which you find intrinsically poetical, musical or expressive. Real words only though please.

I'll kick you off:

Antiphrasis.

There, easy isn't it. Your turn now.

Manumission

Since I was about twelve (Caecilius est mercator. Agrippina Caeciliusque in atrio sunt.*) I've been looking for a valid opportunity to use the word manumission. Damn. I should have got in there first.

*Or something.

Are we allowed words in foreign languages? I've always thought the Old Norse word for 'poem' was in itself extremely poetical:

Kvæði

It should be pronounced something like: K-vai-thee. I love the way it rolls off the tongue, that first sharp sound rolling seamlessly into that wonderful long, silky vowel that modulates into the 'th' sound and then back to a vowel again.

Used to make me shiver every time I said it.

I will allow Old English, Middle English and Norse :D

What I want to know is what Agrippina is doing in Caecilius' back room! Does Caesar know?

Dafydd bach,

I'm afraid that although I said German compound nouns were OK I have no way of verifying this one and if the gap is not a typo then it's 2 words so I'm afraid it has to be disqualified :D

Curses! Sulks Quietly (well, noisily, then!) Oddly enough, it isn't a typo, I've just tried to edit it, and no matter what I do, it puts that gap in. A Pox upon't! It actually is a genuine word, meaning Military vehicle servicing section, and it used to be proudly emblazoned above the relevant door at RAF Gatow, Berlin, in the 70s and 80s.

Is that enough of a grovel, are you going to risk a grown man crying?

I always mistrust words with any kind of military genesis, they are, more often than not, acronyms like Cincfleet, or Cincpac and as such should be disqualified...

What's unusual about lullaby?

If you Google lullaby, you get about eleven million hits.

As a comparison, duvet - a pretty mainstream word, I think - gets a little over six million, as does comforter. Bedstead falls short of a million, and eiderdown doesn't even hit two hundred thousand.

I'm starting to enjoy this now. It's becoming a highly addictive vehicle for procrastination.

Mattress - twenty million, making it twice as common as lullaby.

Pillow case scores a mere three million, and nursery rhyme gets a paltry one point two million. Snoring racks up fewer than four million.

I was talking to a journalist who reviews music for a national daily in the UK, and he was carping about Elvis Costello using the word porcelain in a song. His argument was that it was a wilfully obscure word that EC had only used because it rhymed.

I was shocked. This educated literate guy had simply never come across the word before - and he found it hard to believe that anyone else had. But I think this was just an instance of random distribution - it just so happened that my friend and the word porcelain had never coincided.

So maybe that's just the case with you, Sche, and lullaby - you've simply not encountered it. And as English is not your first language, why should you have, really?

Hawkman
07-28-2010, 07:36 AM
Hi Mark,

Whilst I enjoyed your dissertaion on the poularity of certain words, I don't think you quite grasped the point of Scher's remark. It is not a claim that Lullaby is an unusual word, it is the opposite in fact. If you take a peak at some of the words posted on the preceding page I think you'll get the point :D
