Sweet silver fish swimming in the silent flow
Sweet white flesh from opaque eyes to tail
I could strip you now
suck the flesh
from your back bone
lemon suits you well
I want to drip it all over you
then remove your brain
and drop it
delicately
into a bucket
meet your new friend
tartare
you will get on well
you wont need that tail
I will re-introduce you to water
boiling
silver fish I loved you swimming free
but now its time for tea.

Battered, but unbowed! A chip off the old block. (OK, I'll shut up now) I must say, I liked that, rather puts me in mind of those Japanese restaurants where you choose your own fish. "Meet Wanda - you only need to take her out for one meal!"

Have a bunch of smarty points!!

Jerry,

I'm bound to look a prat
If I mention not the Sprat,
And I'll bet you fifteen quid
That you'd thought about the squid.
Or shoving down your gullet
A tasty bit of mullet.

But don't go out your way
To try and cook a Ray
Or even trying to poach
A Dace, a Roach or Loach
Or feed your favourite wench
With a fillet of fine Tench.
And dining on Red Snapper
Leaves you stranded on the......plaice we dare not mention.

I wouldn't try too many
of the grotty little blenny
And I know you wouldn't like
some chips, some peas and Pike.

You're best off, on the whole
With a piece of Dover Sole.
But the one thing not to catch
Is crabs. They make you scratch

Yours sincerely

Sarcastic Fringehead. No, really, there actually is such a fish.

I enjoyed this whimsical poem immensely; and reading through the various comments was very entertaining to say the least! :)

Is it wise for somebody with paws to be near all this fish? Think of your digestive system!

Dear Fringehead.
You have blown me away with your fringe and your poetic puns. Mostly the poetic puns. Fringes are over rated, scratching away at you forehead, obscuring your vision etc etc :)
cheers friend

Saw a brilliant group last week. Playing Sole Music, of course. Guitarist trained by Julian Bream, Bass player by Ray....Ray Davies. Some of their stuff was a load of carp, as I expalined to the old trout with me, but as we sat on our Perch, having a Dab at our foreheads because of the heat, I couldn't help but notice that most there had a Mullet hair-do. No deodorant. either at least it Smelt like it. The wife thought it was a load of Pollocks, so I told her not to be such a Snapper, she was getting out of breath, turning in to a right old Puffer, so I Carped a bit, entioned that they were discordantl needed a pian Tuna, but we ere plainly Flounder-ing, so we went back to our Plaice. It was a bit of a Bummalo, so we sang the last chorus of "Thank you for the Dace", although we felt that we might Flounder, and, though I Hake to say it, went home, to our little caravan with the Tarpon it. At least nobody played anything by Stiff Pilchard!! I behaved like an Angel, that night.

Im a bit late to comment on your poem JB, but I loved it. The description of the fish at first is beautiful and the bitter irony and the rhyme at the end is dam strong. You did put a drab mood on my dinner or salmon though :D

This salmon........it better not have been someone I know. Incidentally, brilliant item on BBC Radio 2 this morning. Woman goes in to a French hotel, tries out her best French, orders a room for two people. Un chambre pour deux poisson!! Apparently the concierge had difficulty keeping a straight face!
