We were told to write a short--real short--story about a fly and a professor.
The Fly and Romeo and Juliet
Professor Saul had humor, for sure, to complement his wit. I observed and enjoyed it one time when a fat fly buzzed in the acting studio. Baffled— maybe by his roaring voice or his arms that would not stay still—the insect zigzagged in front of him and hopped to rest by the window, sizing the uncovered hole where it could go through. He stopped his animated lecture on Shakespeare, all of a sudden, and signaled us to be silent with his forefinger touching and crossing his clasped lips. “Even flies are tired of their sh!tty existence.” He interjected what he said with his usual demurred laughter. “That one is here to learn drama, to escape from its nasty, very nasty reality.”
Do you think there's a story in this piece?

Why not? The fly has been flying around the theatre district, and flew into a production of Romeo and Juliete. He (or she) saw the perfomance, and totally related with one of the two main characters, but before it ended, he got shooed away by an usher in the theatre. Dying to find out the ending, and he couldn't return to the theatre because it was it's last performance, he goes to the class in college to attend the lecture. Make he or she in love with a wasp or something, some sort of a fly's traditional enemy. How's that? There's your story, now FLY with it, will ya? Extra Oh yeahs, make it a teenage fly, it will give it extra angst!

Oh, I forgot. He said no speculative fiction. I liked your storyline though.

I am afraid I am not very good at playing the role of a critic so maybe my comment wouldn't be of much use to you but I feel I should still mention I enjoyed reading it. :)

Ok, Instead of a fly, use a gangster girl, in love with a guy from a rival gang, who sneaks into the play but is thrown out by the usher before it's over, and sneaks into the class to find out the ending. She finds the ending horrifying, and the fly makes her knock over her drink, on the guy sitting next to her, who decides to ask her out for coffee to make up for the spilled drink, they fall in love and live happily ever after, all on accounta the fly, and William Shakespeare and the fact she's a sneak.
