The next installment of the Dark Side of Virtue

Kindness

She is the one that
stripped you bare
but still your smile
must not waver.

You know that he
who once kissed you
now holds her in his arms
but once you called her friend
so who are you to turn your back?

Over coffee you hear her
complaints even though
as you are left alone
she never inquires after
your health.

Shows no remorse
as she flaunts the life
you once thought to be
your own.

It would be a selfish wrong
to ever expect anything in return
so you must stand by her side
as she sucks you dry.

What right have you
to harbor resentment
you must give yourself up
piece by piece and only
offer love even where
spite and mockery are
what is returned.

Wiping the spit from
your face without skipping
a beat and wishing them
all the happiness they ripped
from beneath your feet.

It's a strong one... sometimes, it's true, kindness doesn't pay, but it's life saving in some situations (speaking from my own experience...).

Well written, a good one, DM - thanks a lot, I was indeed waiting for "your" next virtue...

Be well (and keep kindness for whom deserves it...) - Bar

Nice one, DM. Strikes a chord - one that I wish I hadn't remembered, yet oddly, I'm glad you reminded me. Odd emotions, I have to say, but a superb poem as ever.

Well-worth the wait.

This is definitely one of your better ones; cynical yet controlled, bitter yet balanced. Phew.

And this little verse

It would be a selfish wrong
to ever expect anything in return
so you must stand by her side
as she sucks you dry.

tells it all; unconditional friendship can sometimes feel like a vampire's kiss when it is not reciprocated.

Best regards,

H

Thank you! It is always a challenge trying to keep the same basic tone in which of them, while at the same time trying not to make them all sound the same, so I do make subtle changes between how I apporach each of the Virtues, while still wanting to keep that same basic tone of voice so to speak.

Can feel the sadness overtaking me. Powerful!

Classic lines!
