This poem was inspired by the idea of Stockholm Syndrome. I wanted to try to explore the feelings a person placed in such a situation might be going through and how they would be affected by the developing attachment and dependency upon the one who had caused such suffering.

Displacement

She waited
held in half-anticipation
and half-fear
body atremble
with mixed emotions
and the bitterness of shame
disgust in herself.

The darkness became
her sole comfort
and her greatest torment
the familiar thud
of footsteps approach
matching the beats
of her heart.

He who she knew
she should despise
with the wholeness of
her being.

He who she
angrily, desperately
clung to
with a simpering need.

He became her God
when she begged
to please
He was the Devil
crushing her will
making her body bleed.

Some scars will fade
others remain
and more than He
she became terrified
of the world outside.

She learned to feel
joy when his caress
was gentle and
guilt when she displeased.

When left alone
she cried knowing
deep down inside
there was something
perverse in her.

Dark Muse. This is poetry in all you could want from it. I have no idea why I am the first to reply.

Quite a daunting study.

I found this passage most creative:

The darkness became
her sole comfort
and her greatest torment
the familiar thud
of footsteps approach
matching the beats
of her heart.

The he she interplay worked for me.
