The comics world lost a legend, and the literature world lost its shadow.

Pekar along with a few of the MUST READs (Maus for instance and non-Spirit Eisner) has ben available to me but I just never got around to it. I suspect wrestling all these years with my own demons prevented me from wanting to observe anothers. Reminds me of the time I read a biorgaphy of Robert Howard and as much as I really like Solomon Kane and to a lesser degre Conan--never have bene able to read the stories in the same light since. But Pekar was definitely respected by the comics community and I'm glad he had some measure of fame that hopefully was to his liking. 70 years--THAT I was unaware of. Thought he was more near my age.

I never read his work, but I admired his independent spirit and belief that comics could be art too. I think these two traits are sadly lacking from most people working in comics today.

Pekar's efforts used to appear in the various free presses around Cleveland. Interestingly enough, scenes from American Splendor were filmed in the local diner/dive that I frequent that is just around the corner from my studio. You'd think you've gone back in time each time you enter the place.

A genius of the Ninth Art. Luckily in time he will get the recognition he really deserves.
