View Full Version : What things do you do to distract you from your anger

You know, sometimes I get really angry...Sometimes I wake up that way.
Sometimes, I'm angry because I don't want to get out of bed after 5 hours sleep...
So, I turn on my Eminem tape, or some loud, obnoxious, negative rap and sing screaming all the way to my workplace; where I walk up to the door with a big smile, knock quietly, give a big smile and a cheerful good morning.
Sometimes, I'm angry when I go to bed, I like to play a nice Star Wars battle game or Grand Theft Auto; something where I can shoot at things and wreck cars...
So, what do you do to distract you from your anger...

Sometimes I get very frustrated at inanimate objects, I have a temper when things don't work the way supposed to. The pseudo psychologist in me wants to blame that on displaced anger. However, I don't think I have any healthy coping mechanism lol.

I generally don't do anger - if I get angry more than once or twice a year, then it's unusual.
However, though I am a calm, cheerful chap, if something does actually get me properly angry, then I let nothing distract me. I will simply rearrange the world around me until the source of my anger has been removed from my sphere, and that's all there is to it. I become very intractible, and you'd be surprised what a man with highly focused anger can acchieve.

In terms of anger I'm a one minute woman, I get really angry then a minute later it's gone, most of the time. I kind of wish sometimes I can hold onto it longer. The tiimes that it does last longer I usually have to go walk before I can go argue without saying something I shouldn't say.

I'd say it's always worth considering a prolonged session of vigorous masturbation. And not just in response to feelings of anger. It works for practically anything. Er. I'm told.

Metal music or videogames. If I dont turn to Devildriver or All that remains I start playing anything on my console to distract myself.
Sometimes a ver long walk helps.

I'm no help with this. I've been told the same thing as Pip... something about "bottling" it all up.
When I really blow up I tend to hit and throw things. The key is I make sure I have a safe area to do it. I've a punching bag in my basement as well as a rowing machine. Punishing myself on one of these things for an hour or so will normally help me calm down a bit. I might still be angry, but at least I'm not violent anymore.

I don't get really angry that often, but when I do, I grab my Stratocaster and wail out on it for a while. Nothing like pouring your emotions out in one of those big ol' Seventies-style self-indulgent guitar solos ...
Stay away from people and listen to some soothing music or go out for a walk if it's pleasant outside.

Anger can be used to do something creative. And although i never write utterly out of anger, i have used some of this emotion in parts of my writing. It can be, ideally, cathartic, although i can't say i achieved this result yet :)

I wouldnt say I have anger issues, but a anxiety issue, which in turn creates anger, so when I get angry I tend to get my guitar and write myself a song. Right now music is my biggest focus, and if it wasn't for having something to tick me off so bad, don't think I'd be doing what I'm doing. Anger can be so wonderful, but it sure is a double edged sword.

I go into the woods whenever I'm feeling any sort of negative emotions. I don't get angry that often, though - except in the spring, which is a bad time for me. I've found that shoving matches with my friends over who ate who's pizza is always good to relieve some aggression. I have sparring partners too (we used to have tae kwon do in our town, but our instructor moved away and now the students just spar each other), it's a great way for two people to beat the hell out of each other without any social repercussions.
Some things should make me angry, but they're usually just really funny. Example: like when the old lady at the video store threw a stack of porn at me and then spit on my manager because she had five dollars in late fees. That was almost the funniest thing that I have ever seen.

Distractions are great - it's all you can do in the short term.
If anger is a problem - it doesn't sound as though it is for you people except perhaps Lokasenna the volcano .:smile5: - then it is possible to change - as it is possible to change any trait.
Whether you believe in change depends upon your worldview I suppose, and your personal view about the mind. Permanent change can't be achieved just by addressing the day to day mind and reacting to it. It needs convincing. This sometimes happens when someone sees the effects of anger, which makes such an impression on their mind that they deternmine not to be swept away by it again. Otherwise it's a slowly slowly process.
Perhaps it's not a problem for people here, but it is the most destructive emotion and results in murder sometimes. It's worth tempering.

I don't usually get angry but when I do, I find the placing blame on loved ones works pretty well. . . . . Seriously, I usually brood, then either go for a run or find some physical project to do. But mostly, I don't get angry. I usually just figure out a way for the thing to be my fault, then I try to solve it.

I usually either do something physical (run, split wood, push-ups) or go for a drive while listening to guilty-pleasure music. If you're ever driving in New England and an annoyed looking girl speeds past blasting Nelly Furtado's "Maneater," then we've met. It takes a lot to get me that mad though.

It's too bad I can't send you some of my anger; I get so angry, sometimes, I feel as if my eyeballs are on fire and there is a nail in the center of my head, I begin to shake and turn red, sweat and suddenly, my brain puts on the kill switch...then I go to the doctor and ask for some really good drugs:smile5:
I'd say it's always worth considering a prolonged session of vigorous masturbation. And not just in response to feelings of anger. It works for practically anything. Er. I'm told.
If I'm not mistaking, Mark, that is your answer to everything..."your friends" must be quite good at it by now:smilielol5:

I used to bottle things up; though I wasn't quite aware of it. That usually happened in arguments with my family or husbands, where I wanted to end the conflict; but also wanted my way.
I'm amazed that you can hold on to it long enough to get to the basement.

I love that, I've been thinking about learning some martial art...I'd probably fall on my butt.
I love the story about the old lady...I would have loved to have seen that...it seems like she also uses Marks friends advise.

Well, don't you find that it usually is the loved ones fault...
I think it's a good thing that you do something physical to work it out and then reassess to see how much responsibility you should take.

I grew up in a rural area north of Toronto, and there was always firewood to split. Whenever I got frustrated or angry, I could go outside and split wood. This involved hitting things as hard as I could with a nice big axe. There's nothing like going nuts with an axe until you're physically exhausted to drain the demons from your mind. And you wind up with a nice big pile of firewood to keep you warm in the winter!

One thing I always do to distract myself from my anger is run and run all alone. In doing so my body assimilates some of the tensions of my brains and both will be in sync. I must run in a field or jungle. Fortunately there is a big jungle close by. I just run freely and wildly and at times when I am very stressful I forget to take care of my health and I would strain my limbs and longs but relieve myself from the stress. At times when I try to manage my stress I fail to manage health running frenziedly. It is really hard to keep everything in tact

Yes, I imagine running would be very helpful; particularly in an open area. Of course, I'd probably have a stroke since I'm all out of shape...
I like to eat chocolate and have a cup of tea, watch a good funny movie ; but, usually, I am still thinking about why I am mad.
I have promised myself that I am going to get back to going to the beach; a good swim, feeling raised up by warm water and all your troubles fade away.

She didn't really mean it that way, Olga. It's more like a little dark humorous way to get things out of one's chest, but without really meaning what we say. I have also wished for the death of a few enemies and I don't let it last long either. I think it's a feeling we can't help in its full. It so happens, but we can control it if we want. Basically we can do whatever we want according to our will. Even if it were true that someone is trying to poison you, you won't get poisoned unless you let the poison into your system... your free will... don't you think? :)

Just read these over: I'm sure you know that I meant that I'm a really bad cook and a spendthrift...I've never quite thought of death for people I'm angry at, it's a catch 22 don't you think: Like when you were a child and said everyone would be sorry if you ran away; but then you wouldn't be there to see it. Besides, anyone we are angry enough to want revenge on; we usually need or want in our life...

Sorry I missed your post before Olga...can you really give someone the evil eye; that is so cool. No, I was only telling max I was a bad cook.
I sometimes dream about revenge; sometimes, there is no humorous side to problems. When I dream of revenge, it isn't in the form of death...it's like, reporting people to the tax collectors...

Wishing death to someone who deceived you - there is not humorous side, you are right but, as you know negative energy you send to someone who hurt you will return back to you eventually.

Its always interesting how these threads go; and how many ways people can interpret one set of words.
Okay, let's try this once again: I love Max, he's my buddy, I would love to have him over for a home cooked meal; but I'm a terrible cook
My lawnmower and weedwacker recently broke down and my grass and weeds are knee legnth; as I had no savings, I spent my bill money...
Fixed one problem by buying a lawnmower...
I don't, nor have ever wished anyone dead...even when I thought I hated them. Sometimes, in certain cases, I have wished they would leave me alone.
Now in the case I was refering to, a certain thug is disrupting my life...
as he currently is on parole I was thinking how nice it would be to take revenge and report him to the police...
Yes, there are check and balance systems in nature and as my mother used to say, "Where there's smoke there is fire"...
She was wrong, of course, sometimes, where there is smoke, there is only smoke...
Karma is great, except as you all have noticed, it sometimes misses...there is always the good guy who gets cancer or losses his legs; and there are drug king pins who live great rich lives and die in a comfortable bed...
Now...on with the games folks...What do you do for your anger...

Yes indeed. best way to do it! Most comfortable place in the whole house sometimes. :p
And even crying can help. It can exhaust you, but after a good cry and getting all the self pity out, I feel a lot better. :D

Oops... maybe such ideas to vent anger might make me appear as what I am not :p
Oh, Max, you shouldn't have...I love it. Maybe we should buy matching ones...

I can't cry when I want to. When I want to tell someone off and I'm really mad...then I cry; it's so embarrassing:blush2:

I can't really say I want the tears to come down. They just do if they want. I can't command them. I tell them "stay behind the eyes", but they just won't obey http://smiles.kolobok.us/standart/dntknw.gif It's hard to make a physiological process to obey us http://smiles.kolobok.us/standart/scratch_one-s_head.gif

It's alright. my sister is the same way. Me, I don't know what I want to do with my anger because it just makes me feel like I'm puffing up. I have to go somewhere where no one messes with me. Then I can relax and let it out by distracting myself with either a book, writing(typing), or drawing. I'm not so good with keeping my anger in. There's been only a few times when I did something irrational. liiike...slap!

Bhamtya, I do believe this one's sighted wrong. soundofmusic is the one who said that, but what you say, I am like that sometimes. I do it very very rarely, but when I do...It's just like you said. Better move outta my path!:flare::mad5::rage:

That's a poetic image... two combatants engaged in a struggle for survival... it's a do or die! :p And there's nothing so much wrong in slapping certain faces. Some people really need it in order to wake up for once... it's like doing them a favor :p

Yeah, all of my causes are lost, Max, if they weren't, I'd never join them...
The tears are so darn inconvenient...like laughter; have you ever laughed someplace you shouldn't:blush2: At my moms wake, I suddenly remembered when she would chase my brother around with a broom, her hair would be all astray and she would be biting her tongue...I gave a hooting laugh...oh boy:rolleyes:

I love this picture. Yeah, the irrational anger is worse, sometimes than the tears. When my daughter was about 3, I and my husband had visited a family with a huge, monster of a child. It was very late and I was standing in high heels, my feet were killing me and suddenly, the child hit my daughter. Before I even realized what had happened, I went over to the child and gave him a forceful push to the ground...I thought his mother was going to kill me and I was thinking, "did I do that" :blush2: :ack2:

What happens when you cry in public, bhamtya? Even here in the states, guys can only get away with crying if someone dies...maybe if they lose at poker...

 I would have probably done the same thing if someone slapped my sister, or brothers.
What happened in the end?
Haha, I like the picture too. So funny. But I don't think going around slapping people is okay, but sometimes makes you feel satisfied.
I remember when I was fifteen, my church went to a park, and one of the boys decided it would be fun if they took my sandal and ran off with it. He and his cousin had me running around for an hour with only one shoe trying to get it back. Finally he threw it, and after I retrieved my shoe, I marched right up to him and slapped him so hard his head snapped back. I felt content, now that I look back at it, but then, all I felt was bad...hmmm. Well, it was his fault, he brought it on himself!

I'm glad to hear you weren't shocked, I was always very protective of my daughter. It's interesting, some people say that if a parent is overprotective, they doubt their childs ability to defend themselves. For me, it was just a reaction built up from years of being bullied myself.
I'm glad you smacked that kid; good for you.
I only hit a person my own age twice, once, a girl in the locker room kept throwing my books down; so I threw my brush at her (bad move, she had some sort of head problem)
The other was when a drunk boyfriend pushed me; I smacked him down so fast...I was surpised at myself both times.

Yes, we all have those instincts. I myself do too! Try and come at me or my loved ones, and I shall retaliate! I can be the deviless if I need to!

I had to laugh when I saw this. Head problem or not, do not repeatedly throw my books down! I don't know about throwing a brush, but I have two fists...and some power kicks. ;)
