War Zone

The sound explodes
like thunder
or gun-fire in the sky,
lighting up the night
in shades of red,
a sight that gives so many joy,
shatters my mind
with nightmares
of bombs erupting
over my head,
never knowing
if tonight will be
the moment of my death
There is no peace,
no rest for the wicked
I was told,
now while the nation
celebrates,
I pray for its end,
never was a coward,
but there are things
no man is meant to bear,
now there is no shame
in pulling the covers
over my head and crying
until it stops.

Indeed, the war - all wars - is not only freshly minted corpses, shattered bodies, the destruction of property, but small invisible psychic wounds as well. Well said.

Thank you. Painful, from personal experience, but thank you.

With yesterday being the 4th July, am I right in thinking there is more than a hint of firework fatigue echoing though this piece? If so I can sympathise. What used to be a one night celebration (barring the occasional banger flung by exuberant kids) of November 5th and the failure of an attempt to assassinate James 1st, now lasts best part of a month over here. :D

This poem was written in dedication to the one I love, who fought within the Iraq war, and becasue of it, has a bad reaction to the sound of the fireworks.

Well that's understandable. I haven't been shot at for 30 years but I still don't like loud bangs up close, especially when I don't know where they're coming from.
