So, it's time we cater for the insomniacs among us...

I went to bed about 10.pm.
Ok, I admit it was a little early, but at the time I was actually sleepy.
However, now it's 12.56am, I lay in bed for more than two hours!!!

I tried listening to music, I tossed and turned, called my beau, nothing worked!

So now here I am...and I'm wondering, anybody else getting trouble to sleep?!

Can't sleep as have to ask my sister in law if she is cheating on my brother...it's really stressing me out!

I can't sleep because, well, I never sleep.. Lately it's been better than usual, I've been getting an average of about 4 hrs a night.. but this is a recent development.. for the last 6 mths I was getting anywhere from 5-10 hrs of sleep a week... at least it leaves lots of time for writing and reading haha..

sorry to hear that princess, hope it turns out not to be true..

Well my insomnia is sort of, sporadic at best. I find myself in emotional distress and pace around my room thinking about my own insignificance on this small planet and how i can fix absoloutly everything wrong with human conditioning. Get around 6-8 hours a night after drinking, and im lucky to get 1-2 proper hours of sleep while im in this frantic state. Just lying in bed tossing and turning all night... the worst was when i didnt get any sleep for around 5 days, everything i did felt like i was watching myself from across the room, wierd feeling :s

Usually I get completely smashed at a party every month or 2, and that wards away the insomnia.

hahaha.. so true.. I sleep really well when I get completely smashed.. I love it..

drinking should be a medical treatment for insomnia.. haha

I just think. I think way too much. Even when I'm utterly exhausted, there are too many thoughts fluttering about in my mind.

Sometimes it's quite constructive. I'll lose sleep of course, but I'll conjure up excellent ideas; ideas about art, random projects, people and plans for the next day.

More often than not, I'll be running through tiny insignificant problems that will drive me insane until I come up with a solution to each one of them.

Occasionally, I'll be thinking "what might of happened if...?" I'll get sudden rushes of nostalgia, but I won't be sad... more curious and even enlightened.

Then the worst... thinking about trying not to think, or thinking about sleeping when it's thinking that's keeping you from sleeping. It's a vicious circle :(

islandclimber
10-27-2008, 05:29 AM
yeah LadyW thinking about sleeping, thinking about trying not to think.. those are like the worst solutions to insomnia.. meditation can help with that.. just allowing yourself to think but not grasping at the thoughts... not that I'm very good at it haha.. I'm still up and it is 5:30am...

:( I feel for you, really.
I can never sleep on Sunday nights; I think it's just the idea that I'll be waking up to a new week, I have no control over what will happen in that week and therefore I feel a need to plan as much as possible. (I'm not crazy...)

I have the EXACT same problem! i start pacing around my room in distress over these menial issues... i have but one quick solution, drinking.

islandclimber

there is one other quick solution.. though I believe it is against the law in most countries... smoking pot.. definitely puts you to sleep though.. at least when you burn out... not speaking from personal experience or anything here :p

for the past two or three years there are some times that i cannot sleep. if that happens one night it usually happens to me for some days after that, it can continue evn for weeks. there have been many times that i have passed about 4 hours in bed trying to sleep and though i am exhausted i cannot. and generally i am really anxious about many things, so that is not really helpful i guess...

Hi all!
Well, eventually I did sleep last night. I slept from about 1.17 to about 5.30 this morning. It's 9.32am right now, and I'm at work.

I don't drink at all, so 'smashing' is not an option for me. However, I do meditate sometimes.
But then, as LadyW says, the THINKING starts - and I think about everything under the sun!
When my brain is abuzz I can never ever sleep, and then the tossing and turning starts.

We should schedule a time for us insomniacs to meet here at the LitNet, when we can exchange all these thoughts that keep us up at nihgt - they might be pretty hilarious! lol...I know mine would!

O yeah, the point of quoting you, Insomniac, was to say that my insomnia is sporadic as well. It doesn't show up for some time, and when it does, it's bad!
There was a time that I was afraid I'd die in my sleep, and so I would never sleep at night!!!

Usually it's very easy for me to fall asleep, but to stay asleep is another matter... My skin usually wakes me up a couple of times every night. Now it's getting better though, thanks to the medication, so I hope that soon I'll be able to sleep quietly all night long :)

I think I'd get by better if I was awake during the night, and slept in some form of dark cosy cave during the daytime. I'm much more lively at night.

Yes once a week escaping through alcohol is a wonderful thing, even without the added benefit of sleeping well.. just the drunken escape from reality makes it worthwhile lol..

I would rather sleep in the day sometimes too.. Tell me if you find a good cave lol...

When I get a good sleep. I love it. I'd hate not to be able to dream. I love dreams.

For the past month now I have been only getting three to four hours of sleep every Sunday night. It's cuz I'm all pumped from weekend fun.

*sigh* I hate it. It's just awful. I really don't much sleep anyway because of school. Urgh. It just spills from one day onto the next and by the end of the week I'm just dead.

Yeh, its horrible when it builds up, you just lose all your energy and cant concentrate on any work. A good thing to do is do some excersise about 3 hours before you want to go to sleep, have a shower right before, and then you should be able to get to sleep.

Just another remedy that works for me, to help my liver a little ^_^

Yay for insomnia again.. I got really quite drunk on saturday night and slept like a baby for over 12 hrs (mind you, I was a wreck the next day, I could barely open my eyes, the light was hurting them too much :p ) .. But I have only slept 2 hrs total in the 3 nights since and it is 3 am now so this night isn't looking much better.. I keep lying there awake thinking of the most random things.. some of the thoughts are just plain confusing and I don't even understand how they came to be.. It is driving me insane haha.. soon I am going to be seeing a second self or something, fight club style :p.. might be kind of neat actually, I should run with this...

but a random pathway opened up before my eyes and I step on through to a street with several variations on the same name, but nothing holds it to the ground and I stumble off the edge to fall into one shade of oblivion.. the second one arrives with sightless eyes and asks me for a light.. I might have replied "smoking causes lung cancer", but instead I shut my own eyes and snapped my fingers, and the sky burst into flames.. somehow I thought of rain and I found myself in a monsoon, without fingers, and I realized I had only my lips to blame... visceral steps and the day was glued to the floor, I walked all over it, but never found a way in.. screaming, I can't pass into even an idea of sleep.. I'm wide awake, am I mourning?

I don't like sleeping. At least not at home, where I am free to think and do as I please. It feels as though when I am sleeping I am missing something, or even more so, wasting time. I've been trying to find a way to cheat sleep, and have come a little way, but am still lacking. Every once in a while I have to sleep. :(

I have found through my 2 liters or more a day of caffeine and sugar, diluted slightly in water and artificial flavors, that I manage to sleep less. Yesterday I got by sleeping for 7 hours after being awake for 19 or so.

Rebound sleep is the worst. Knowing that I must sleep more to compensate for sleeping less is a terrible realization.

On another note, I don't mind sleeping in school. As long as the class doesn't do much for me. I rather be alert in Math, Science, and English, especially since we started having 45-90 minute discussions on our new reading assignment, All the Kings Men.

1 Pint of Kronenberg
1 Bottle of Leffe ( the best beer in the world )
2 double brandies with cola.
Then I went home and and to complement various snacks, I drank a bottle of Pinot Grigio.
It works really well. I don't remember what time I went to bed but I slept until 12 noon.

But .....

I never seem to get enough! There's so much to do and not enough hours so I end up going bed late. And even when I do bed early-ish I can't stop thinking and laughing about things that happened during the day.

I understand what you mean. There is a thread on this forum that quotes the poet Longfellow referring to sleep as "slices of death," but I prefer to think of sleep as a kind of ante-room to death; after all, the dead do not dream.
Sleep has, for me, what I call the holy trinity: warmth, comfort, and relaxation; qualities that are often missing from the state of being awake.
Unless you are one of those beings who wakes up saying "Hail smiling morn", you're a darned sight better off in bed.

There is a thread on this forum that quotes the poet Longfellow referring to sleep as "slices of death,"

Sorry everyone but it is not Longfellow or, wich is a more common opinion, Edgar Allan Poe. Check out this old thread I started ages ago:

http://www.online-literature.com/forums/showthread.php?t=808&highlight=slices+death

The truth is that no one really knows who used the phrase first, sometimes it is refered to as a travesty or paraphrase of the french expression "tranches de la vie" (wich means "slices of life"), a concept used in theater and art.

as i said above there is one other drug solution.. it could be called grass. lol..
The first time that I EVER had insomnia, I was in a hotel in GP and I was high. Weed is supposed to put people to sleep, but it does the opposite for me. Motion sickness pills used to work, but during my most recent final exams they didn't help.
As to why, I get insomnia because I'm afraid of it. I self-monitor myself too much. I'll ask myself if I'm falling asleep every thirty seconds or so, thus keeping myself awake until sunrise. It sucks, but luckily it doesn't happen often. I'm getting help with it now, because it almost cost me three classes. I almost had a stress meltdown and ran away back home! :brickwall All over stupid sleep. Fear of insomnia keeps me from doing a lot of things. How pathetic.

went into "dreamland" around 5.00, and it's 10.00, now, i've slept little, and have to make the cleaning of my bedroom today! (or never more, says a certain raven ...)

and I have something for the night, so, even if I sleep during the afternoon, it's going to be a tough day. BbBut, it's WEEKEND, so, tomorrow is Sunday, and I'll may recover for the week! :) :thumbs_up :thumbs_up

I've had some trouble sleeping as of lately.

To pass time I read.. watch some episodes of the fantastic Dexter.. watch some movies

but it's tiring trying to pass time, and i really need to sleep.

Has anyone had this problem? how'd you deal with it?

Well, as my post three above yours which I made over a year ago states, I had an insane problem with insomnia. I just stopped thinking about it after a while and learned to live without much sleep. Oddly enough, I havn't had much trouble sleeping since then.

That doesn't really work around exam time and when I have classes (aka. when I need sleep to concentrate), so I also have a bottle of ridonkulously strong sleeping pills in my bedside drawer that my doctor gave me last year. I've only ever taken like three of them because they make me tired for days, but just their presence and the assurance that I will sleep tonight even if I have to drug myself, calms me down and helps me fall asleep.

I am going to try to stay away from this thread so that it doesn't jinx my streak of 2 days.

That said, when it does, I will know where to come ;)

I usually can't sleep when I am not tired, but sometimes I have to use my childish trick to knock myself out.:-P I start reading a book(usually one of my most hated course books) untill I feel that I can't take the torture anymore, and this stimulates my brain and before I know it, I am dead with a beating heart!;)

There's always hot milk I guess.

I slept most of the afternoon away and I have 2 hours until I have to go to the hospital for my surgery. Too nervous to sleep now.

whoa, pip, here's to as little discomfort as possible, and i look forward to some posts later on tomorrow or the next day, even if you're drug-addled or whatever. Particularly if you are drug-addled.

There's supposed to be 1 to 2 days observation at the hospital, and I don't want some sneaky orderly to steal my laptop, so everyone will have to wait until Friday for any drug addled post ;).

I could spend the rest of the night telling you guys how much I hate insomnia. . . . Instead, I'll just lie awake and repeat four-letter words.

Repeat four letter words? Strange method there, lol.
