Need name of American short story

Hi, when I was in middle school in the 1980's (in the United States in upstate New York) we were required to read a number of short stories. One of them was "The Most Dangerous Game" and another I cannot remember. I believe the author was American. And I think we had to read it again in high school. It was about a mantaray (stingray) which somehow got caught on a fishing line or rope; and the boy who was fishing also got caught on the line/rope and was dragged underwater by the mantaray for what seemed like an eternity. I think he finally wrapped the rope around some sharp barnacles and managed to free himself.

I have racked my brain forever trying to remember the title and have searched google extensively, but I cannot find it! It is driving me crazy. Does anyone have any ideas?
