I remember reading this, although i do not know where. I was still in elementary school. But im sure that the story fascinated me :)
Anyway, here it is, in its synopsis:

Ibykos was returning to his home city of Klazomenai, in the coast of Asia minor. But he was being followed by two people. He noticed that, so tried to move faster, but he didnt achieve losing them. So at night they attacked him and killed him, robbing all that which he was carrying.
At the time of the kill a large group of Cranes (i think they are called that; they are Geranoi in greek) was flying above, and the thieves saw them.
The following day the thieves reached the agora of Klazomenai. There they started bargaining for goods, laughing and shouting. But at one point a group of cranes flew over them, high in the sky.
The one thief observed that, showed the cranes to the other, and said: "Behold, the witnesses of Ibykos!".
But news that some traveller had died outside the city had reached the agora. And later on the people who heard that saying of the thief understood what had happened, and they hanged both of the thieves.
