Clue time:
This painter is FRENCH. HE lived in the 18TH CENTURY. He has paintings in the LOUVRE, NATIONAL GALLERY, and this one is from the ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO. He had a SON WHO ALSO BECAME A PAINTER.
That should help.

Victor Hartmann ?

That is correct Emil.
I recently stumbled upon Mussorgsky while doing some research, which led me to Hartmann.
Mussorgsky and Hartmann were close friends. Following Hartmann’s death, many of his works were displayed at the Academy of Fine Arts in St Petersburg inspiring Mussorgsky to compose “Pictures at an Exhibition”.
The particular piece above is a study for ballet costumes.
Here is Hartmann’s proposal for a new gate in Kiev:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9b/Hartmann_--_Plan_for_a_City_Gate.jpg
And here is Mussorgsky’s movement through the gate:

It's a pity that Mussorgsky never heard Ravel's magnificent orchestration of his piano score.
OK how about this one?

Guinevere - William Morris
Give me a few hours to come up with something.
Well, you are right - but the painting is not in fact 'Guinevere', though this is a common mistake. A metaphorical bonus point if anyone can give the correct title.
Hmm, apparently that one was too easy... meh, I've been reading some Morris, so he was in my head.

Lok: You're right. It's La Belle Iseult, apparently.
Everyone else: La Belle Iseult isn't the sulky redhead - it's Lok's skinny brunette. I might have confused the apparent order of things here.
The sulky redhead that I posted is now up for identification. Here she is again.

Daniel Gerhartz has some serious skills... but he doesn't seem to have the least idea what century he is living in.
I would call him a free spirit. Creativity has no time limits.:ihih:
His parents met in art school, where his father was studying under the G.I. Bill. When his parents married, his father gave up his own dreams of a career in art and started a gardening business to support his family. But every night, father and son shared a little ritual that began when the artist was was just nineteen months old.
Recent honors and awards include the Trustees Purchase Award at The Autry Museum of Western Heritage in Los Angeles, CA, the Prix de West Purchase Award at The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, OK, and the Patron's Choice Award at The Autry Museum of Western Heritage. His book, The Image of Christ, was a finalist for the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association Gold Medallion Book Award.

The artist is actually a major figure in one of the major post-WWII art movements.
I have noticed that you and Emil don’t like to give more information about the artist. :wink5:
It is always a good way to learn about artists……..and keep a tread moving.
The artist is considered by critics and historians to be one of the early works of pop art.
The artist was awarded the William and Noma Copley Foundation Award, 1960; the John Moores Contemporary Painting Prize, 1960; the Talens Prize International, 1970; the Leone d’Oro for his exhibition in the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, 1993; the Arnold Bode Prize at Documenta X, Kassel, 1997; and the Max Beckmann Prize for painting, 2006. He was made a Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour (CH) by Queen Elizabeth II in 2000.

ftil,
There have been several examples in the past on this thread where St Lukes and others have posted additional information about the artists. The trend has been to start out with a minimalist approach by simply posting an image, wait two to three days add some clues wait add more if needed, etc. I have also seen where participants will include a direct kink to to the artist, rather than regurgitate the info.
I will agree, that there are times when participants wait too long to post clues, usually because we forget.
I notice you tend to unload with numerous clues up front. In this case, it would seem that you know the answer. I will hold off myself on answering this one, in hopes that some of the other past participants might take a shot.
.
I have to apologize for my impatience. I enjoy learning about new artists…….. I will be quiet. :wink5:
