For Biggus:-

There’d be breathless hush in the ground tonight
If it weren’t for the vuvuzelas -
As the German onslaught’s, Blitzkrieg might
Dismays our England players.
It’s not that they carry a nation’s prayer
Or the selfish hope of a season’s fame,
But enormous cheques in their bank accounts -
“Come on Lampard, Play the game!”

The England players dressed in red -
Red their embarrassed shameful faces,
As the Germans break leaving England for dead
There’s no reward for second places.
4 -1 the score with minutes to play
when England stop, the Lions tamed
then the voice of a schoolboy wails his say,
“For Christ’s sake Lampard, Play the Game!”

Now that hits the nail right on the head!! Well Impressed. In fact, as I genuinely heard a certain England player say, (the only one I ever met), "The boy done right good". I'm fairly certain Newbould would be giggling as well!

Hi dafydd,

and thanks for your kind words. (Love the website by the way)

As for Sir Henry, I rather think he's probably spinning in his grave :D

Best, H

This is much beyond my meager competences, Hawk, so much beyond, that I've noticed only now you posted it... (I wonder if miss more such important posts, not only by you by the way... - well, I try my best not to) - and after all it's all for Biggus! but I salute you for your untiring, both skillful and amusing reports on different (sometimes amazing, sometimes worrying) aspects of your kingly island... faithfully yours - B ar

I'm so glad you called our little aircraft carrier in the North Sea "kingly", despite the gender of our monarch. Most of us would hate to be called "queenly"!!

Sweet Bar,

I gather from your reply that you don’t quite get the point of this one. Not to worry, Please follow the link below to Sir Henry Newbolt’s, “Vitaï Lampada” which I have cruelly parodied into a comment on England’s performance in the World Cup.

“Vitaï Lampada” was one of those stirring patriotic pieces written to inspire the nation’s youth to fling themselves into the hell of WW1, and in retrospect, probably deserving of parody.

The title is a pun on the England footballer, Frank Lampard’s name.

In closing may I observe that your devotion is duly noted and deeply appreciated. :D

Live and be well, H

I hope this little match girl is in no danger of freezing to death on Christmas Eve, which in literature at least, seems to be the fate reserved for them by authors! Take my advice, on on the eve of the nativity, stay indoors and have some madeira, m'dear!
