So, every once in a great while I think about this short story that I read in a school literature book when I was in grade school in the mid-1970's (maybe 4th or 5th grade, I'm not sure). It was about a man stuck on a freeway in a traffic jam and it just went on forever. The story was a class assigment and there was some discussion with the teacher who let us know that the traffic jam was an allegory for hell. I was thinking about it again today and decided I'd try to figure out the name/author of the story on Google but I haven't been succesful as of yet. But I did find this forum, and it seemed like a good idea to sign up and ask: Does anyone know what story I'm talking about? And hello to everyone, it's nice to know there's site like this in existence.

You sure it was a short story? Check out Concrete Island by JG Ballard. Any chance that's it?

I thought Concrete Island at first aswell, but for the most part the novel is not set in a traffic jam.
