into the crackling downpour
ball lightning forging golden circles
in the mist

The little bird
made a beeline for
a globe of gold fire
and hung there
a moment
on tiptoes

face down

Sounds like it was Gallito's time then.

I understand ball lightning to be a pretty rare phenomenon although my father claims to have encountered it in an aeroplane during the Berlin Airlift. He maintains that it did some damage as it floated down the fuselage before exiting the aircraft by whatever esoteric process it had entered.

I found it hard to switch emotional gears from the vivid, objective first two stanzas to the somewhat comical tone of the third and then the...? burlesque? tone of the last, in which whatever empathy one might have felt for little gallito becomes a culinary guffaw.
