Today is Iceland's national holiday. the birthday of the man who was in the lead of our fight for independence Jón Siguršsson. He is always called our president even though he never got that titled, he probably would have if he had lived to see the day of our independence on December 1 1944, we used the opportunity when the Nazi took Denmark but we where protected by British and American soldiers.

just thought you wanted to know. ;)

Hurray for the world's oldest, still living democracy!

I can honestly say that Iceland is one of my favourite countries - all those wonderful sagas have made me fall in love with the place!

My brother was once barred from entering Iceland because of a small conference of a few people from the adult entertainment industry lol.

He eventually went on a private vacation for a week a bit later, and he enjoyed it.

Edit: In other Iceland related news, I was happy to read about the legalization of same-sex marriage last week. Now if you guys could get around to not killing those whales ;).

Happy Independence Day, Helga, and any other Icelander checking this thread! I love the sagas, too, but never managed to visit.

Lokasenna- have you been to Iceland?

Not as yet, no... but I'm working on it! I've actually discovered that I've got a little bit of free time coming up toward the end of September, and I'm wondering whether I can scrape enough money together for a little Icelandic holiday...

I'm sure you'll have fun if you do get here Lokasenna....

if anyone wants to know than today on June 19 it has been 95 years since women got the right to vote. Before the word feminist was used for the women's rights movement we had the red-socks movement and most women both working away from home and at home went downtown and just didn't work for one day to show the men really how important they are.
