See love birds on park benches
billing and cooing
telling each other public secrets
and oozing romance?
I eat them.

Careful to gnash their feathers
break their
hollow bones
wings and dreams
chew their
love
to a lovely mulch
where I plant contempt
to grow green apples
but
I cannot grind them down enough
and birds hijack my heart
tugging heartstrings taut
lifting, pulling; who'm I fooling?
Stealing, flying; am I dying?
Airborne with my heart in tow.
A new cardio-
Sunward I climb and melt

Fire-gone!
and back to being
spent casings for
darts of pleasure or
pink bullets

The birds laugh from their branches so
I begin to eat again.

I'm not sue I like the "fire gone" section, but the rest is a kind of anti romantic musing; I can't really say I understand it, but I like it

Glad you like it! I appreciate the comment.
The fire-gone section is a shout out to a couple of my favorite songs, "Darts of Passion" from Franz Ferdinand and "Pink Bullets" from The Shins. Both treat love differently but with similar metaphors. I'll look into better means of describing the mixed emotions though. It's tough to treat something I consider light fancy with the intensity I meant for the bird-eater.

A small correction: "heartstrings taut", not "taught". Otherwise, pretty good attempt :)
